Moss Point High School
Moss Point High School is a public high school in Moss Point, Mississippi, United States. It is part of the Moss Point School District. History Moss Point High School was established in 1883 in a two-story schoolhouse. Tuition was required. There was also a Moss Point Academy. William Cole served as principal in 1930 and shot game at Pascagoula Springs. Magnolia High School served the area's African American students during segregation. W. H. Whisenton was its principal. Moss Point High School was white only. A two-story art deco school building was constructed as part of a Works Project Administration (WPA) project in 1941. Magnolia High School closed in the 1970s. Monarchs were the school mascot and the school colors were purple and gold. After desegregation Magnolia became a junior high school. Melvin Booker
Melvin Jermaine Booker (born August 20, 1972) is an American former professional basketball player. A , point guard, he played for the University of Missouri. Amateur career Booker was a standout high school player in Moss Point, Mississippi. He averaged 28 points per game in his senior year and was named the player of the year in his class. Despite that, none of the major four-year schools from the region recruited him. Booker signed with Missouri, a school whose attention he caught during a prior recruitment run through the area. Missouri assistant coaches noticed him while they were scouting fellow Mississippi standouts Litterial Green and Chris Jackson. Booker was the 1994 Big Eight Player of the Year, when he led Missouri to an undefeated conference record of 14–0 and an Elite Eight berth. Toni Seawright
Toni Deniece Seawright (born June 25, 1964) is an American actress and singer-songwriter. In 1987, Seawright made history as the first African American to become Miss Mississippi and was the fourth runner-up in 1988's Miss America pageant. Life and career Seawright was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She attended Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi, where she was the first African American to earn a degree in music at Mississippi University for Women, and majored in Vocal Music and Business at that university. Toni became the first African American to hold a recital in vocal music at MUW as well. She went on to compete for Miss ''W'', the local chapter preliminary to the Miss America Pageant and won. This win put her in the position to compete for the state's Miss Mississippi Pageant in 1987. She went on to capture the coveted crown, making history as the very first African American to ever win. Robert Khayat
Robert Conrad Khayat (born April 18, 1938) was the 15th Chancellor of the University of Mississippi. He also played American football as a placekicker, guard, and center for Ole Miss and in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins during the 1960, 1962 and 1963 seasons. Kenneth Ray Johnson (born January 7, 1958) is a former American football defensive back and return specialist who played ten seasons for the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Mississippi State and was drafted by the Falcons in the fifth round of the 1980 NFL Draft. College career Kenny Johnson played as a defensive back and return specialist at Mississippi State for four seasons from 1976-1979. He played in all 11 games each season. ''The Clarion Ledger'' is an American daily newspaper in Jackson, Mississippi. It is the second-oldest company in the state of Mississippi, and is one of the few newspapers in the nation that continues to circulate statewide. It is an operating division of Gannett River States Publishing Corporation, owned by Gannett. History The paper traces its roots to ''The Eastern Clarion,'' founded in Jasper County, Mississippi, in 1837. Later that year, it was sold and moved to Meridian, Mississippi. After the American Civil War, it was moved to Jackson, the capital, and merged with ''The Standard''. It soon became known as ''The Clarion''. The Mississippi State Bulldogs football program represents Mississippi State University in the sport of American football. Kevin Fant (born October 24, 1980) is a former American football quarterback. He was the starting quarterback for the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Isaiah Canaan (pronounced Cannon; born May 21, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for Olympiacos of the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague. He was an All-American college player at Murray State University. College career Canaan, a 6'0" guard from Biloxi, Mississippi, went to Murray State after leading Biloxi High School to the 5A Mississippi state championship as a senior.
