Mosman
Mosman is a suburb on the Lower North Shore region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Mosman is located 8 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the Municipality of Mosman. Localities In February 1997, a notice was published in the Government Gazette by Mosman Council advising that they had assigned ''Mosman'' as the only suburb in the Mosman Local Government Area. Archibald Mosman
Archibald Mosman (15 October 1799 – 29 January 1863) was a Scottish-born merchant, grazier and whaler in New South Wales, Australia. Early life Archibald Mosman was born on 15 October 1799 in Scotland to Hugh Mosman, convener of Lanark and Agnes Kennedy of Auchtyfardle, Lesmahagow near Lanarkshire. He had a twin brother George and an older brother Hugh a deputy-lieutenant. Career and personal life Archibald and George Mosman spent some time growing sugarcane in the West Indies before arriving in Australia aboard the ''Civilian'' in 1828. The pair promptly started a business in Sydney, establishing a warehouse on George Street which they used to ship wool to Liverpool. Around 1832, Archibald left the wool business and moved into whaling, operating a pair of whaling vessels out of Sirius Cove. Hugh Mosman
Hugh Mosman (11 February 1843 – 15 November 1909) was a mine owner and politician in Queensland, Australia. He discovered gold in Charters Towers. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Mosman was born on 11 February 1843 in Mosman, New South Wales. Merchant Archibald Mosman (1799–1863) was his father, and his mother was Harriet née Farquharson Hugh received his education at The King's School in North Parramatta, New South Wales. Mosman initially aspired to be a pastoralist, but failed to establish a successful career and was left broke., He visited Queensland in 1860, hoping to acquire properties there; this was also unsuccessful. James Mosman
James Mosman or Mossman (died 1573) was a Scottish goldsmith. He was a son of John Mosman, a goldsmith working in Edinburgh. It has been suggested that the Mosman family was of Jewish origin. He married Mariota Arres, and secondly in 1571, Janet King. Mosman and Arres rebuilt the John Knox House on the High Street in Edinburgh. Moubray House is adjacent to the west. Mosman and Arres were given permission in May 1557 by Mary of Guise to extend the cellars of another house they owned under the High Street. This house was on the south side of the Royal Mile between houses belonging to Alan Dickson and Richard Hoppar. On 16 December 1558 he weighed and valued the treasures of St Giles' Kirk including the reliquary of Saint Giles' arm bone. John Mosman was an apothecary at the Scottish court. Mosman worked for the households of James IV of Scotland and the queen consort Margaret Tudor supplying medicines and spices, herbal remedies, and providing treatments. Family background Other members of the family were goldsmiths, including John Mosman who worked for James V and his son James Mosman, who built the house in Edinburgh known as the "John Knox House". It has been suggested that the Mosman family was of Jewish origin. A branch of the family including a John Mosman and his son Robert Mosman was recorded in February 1490 in connection with their tenancy of the lands of "Easter Gledstanis". Family background There is some confusion between the John Mosman who served James V of Scotland and the activities of other members of the family. Jupiter Mosman
John Joseph (Jupiter) Mosman (1861-1945) was an Aboriginal Australian prospector, one of the group of four who discovered gold at Charters Towers, Queensland, Australia. It became one of the premier goldfields of Australia, yielding £23,000,000 worth of gold. Mosman is credited with having found the first gold-bearing stone. Early life Mosman was born about 1861 in North-Western Queensland. His tribal name is unknown. As a small boy, he came to Kynuna Station. In the late 1860s, pastoralist Hugh Mosman of Tarbrax Station visited Kynuna and liked the boy so much that Hugh Mosman arranged for the boy to come to live at Tarbrax with him. Melzar Hunt Mosman (March 10, 1843 – January 11, 1926) was an American sculptor who made a number of Civil War and Spanish–American War monuments in Massachusetts. Early life Mosman was born on March 10, 1843, in Chicopee, Massachusetts. His father, Silas Mosman, ran the Ames Manufacturing Company's bronze foundry. The foundry made statues and monuments, including the statue of Benjamin Franklin at Old City Hall and the bronze doors for the east wing of the United States Capitol. The Mosman family had been involved in metal work since they arrived in Massachusetts in 1632. In 1860 Mosman went to work at Ames, where he produced drawings for presentation swords. Tony Bernard Mosman (born Anton Bernard Mosman) (1886-1985) was an American artist from Carroll, Iowa, United States.
