Andělská Hora (Bruntál District)
Andělská Hora (german: Engelsberg) is a town in Bruntál District in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 400 inhabitants. Administrative parts The village of Pustá Rudná is an administrative part of Andělská Hora. Geography Andělská Hora is located about northwest of Bruntál and north of Olomouc. It lies in the Hrubý Jeseník mountain range. The highest point is the mountain Vysoká hora at above sea level. History Andělská Hora was founded in 1540 as a mining town. In 1553 it received a mining register and in 1556 it was furnished with all necessary permissions for mining by Jan the Elder of Vrbno and Bruntál. After the Thirty Years' War the town was given to the Teutonic Order which owned it until 1639. According to the Austrian census of 1910 the village had 1,789 inhabitants, 1,767 (99.7%) were German-speaking. Most populous religious group were Roman Catholics with 1,761 (98.4%). Silesians ( szl, Ślōnzŏki or Ślůnzoki; Silesian German: ''Schläsinger'' ''or'' ''Schläsier''; german: Schlesier; pl, Ślązacy; cz, Slezané) is a geographical term for the inhabitants of Silesia, a historical region in Central Europe divided by the current national boundaries of Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic. Historically, the region of Silesia (Lower and Upper) has been inhabited by Germans (German speakers), Czechs, Poles and Slavic Upper Silesians. Therefore, the term Silesian can refer to anyone of these ethnic groups. However, in 1945, great demographic changes occurred in the region as a result of the Potsdam Agreement leaving most of the region ethnically Polish and/or Slavic Upper Silesian. Silesian German
Silesian (Silesian: ', german: Schlesisch), Silesian German or Lower Silesian is a nearly extinct German dialect spoken in Silesia. It is part of the East Central German language area with some West Slavic and Lechitic influences. Silesian German emerged as the result of Late Medieval German migration to Silesia, which had been inhabited by Lechitic or West Slavic peoples in the Early Middle Ages. Variations of the dialect until 1945 were spoken by about seven million people in Silesia and neighboring regions of Bohemia and Moravia. After World War II, when the province of Silesia was incorporated into Poland, with small portions remaining in northeastern Czech Republic and in eastern Germany, the local communist authorities expelled the German speaking population and forbade the use of the language.
