Jean Morax
Jean Morax (16 September 1869 – 11 May 1939) was a painter, theater decorator and draftsman from the Canton of Vaud. Biography A pupil of Édouard Castres in Geneva then of Benjamin Constant, of Luc-Olivier Merson and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris, Jean Morax shared his life between Paris, Florence and Switzerland. He exhibited his paintings influenced by the Nabis in Geneva, notably at the National Exhibition (1896), in Paris (bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900)) and in Munich (1905). With his brother René, he created the Théâtre du Jorat in Mézières in 1903; There, he designed costumes, sets and posters, especially for ''Henriette'' (1908), ''Tell'' (1914), ''Le Roi David'' (1921), and ''La belle de Moudon''. René Morax
René Morax (11 May 1873 – 3 January 1963) was a Swiss writer, playwright, stage director and theatre manager. He founded the Théâtre du Jorat in Morges in 1908, and promoted historical and rural theatre in French in Switzerland. He is known for the play ''Le Roi David'', with music by Arthur Honegger. Early life and career Born in Morges, Canton de Vaud, on 11 May 1873, Morax studied literature in Lausanne, Paris and Berlin. His first play, ''La Nuit des quatre-temps'' (1901) was given at the casino in Morges. This show gave a new direction to the culture in Switzerland. Indeed, following the example of what was done in France, this was the first expression of a true form of popular theater. In 1903, he premiered ''La Dîme'' at Mézières, Vaud, Mézières. This drama, based on a historical fact, well known in the region, tells the story of Pastor Martin who in 1790 was thrown into prison because he disputed the fact that the peasants must pay a direct tax on potatoes. Le Roi David
''Le Roi David'' was composed in Mézières, Switzerland, in 1921 by Arthur Honegger, as incidental music for a play in French by René Morax. It was called a dramatic psalm, but has also been performed as oratorio, without staging. The plot, based on biblical narration, tells the story of King David, first a shepherd boy, his victories in battle, relationship to Saul, rise to power, adultery, mourning of his son's death, and finally his own death. The work has 27 musical movements consisting of voice solos, choruses, and instrumental interludes. A narrator unifies the work by providing spoken narration of the story of King David. Arthur Honegger was commissioned to write incidental music to accompany René Morax's play ''Le Roi David'' in 1921. The commission outlined that the work was to be performed by 100 singers and seventeen instruments. Honegger struggled with these limited resources, and wrote to Igor Stravinsky for advice. Victor Morax
Victor Morax (16 March 1866 – 14 May 1935) was an ophthalmologist born in Morges, Switzerland. He studied in Freiburg (Germany) and Paris, and from 1891 to 1903, he worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. From 1903 to 1928, he was associated with the Hôpital Lariboisière, rejoining the Pasteur Institute as a permanent member in 1929. In 1930, he became a member of the Académie de Médecine. While at the Pasteur Institute, Morax discovered the bacillus '' Moraxella lacunata'', a cause of chronic conjunctivitis. The disease is sometimes referred to as either "Morax' disease" or as "Axenfeld's conjunctivitis", named after German ophthalmologist Theodor Axenfeld (1867–1930), who made his discovery of the bacillus during the same time period as did Morax.
