Moorish Oven
A moorish oven (''hornos morunos'' in Spanish) is a traditional clay wood-fired oven. Calera Calera is a type of Moorish traditional oven for the manufacture of plaster. It is commonly used in Morocco and environs. During the Moorish period, the plaster produced was intended to erect walls on the humble homes of Madrid. Its use dates back to the early Middle Ages, and the popularity of plaster as a building material caused the demand to surge so much that more than hundred Moorish ovens were built within the Madrid community. The demand for plaster was local so all of the ovens are located near the historic centers of Madrid municipalities. The name comes from the use made during the Al-Andalus era of ''Aljezares'' in the production of plaster. These furnaces were in production until mid-century. Clay
Clay is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay minerals (hydrous aluminium phyllosilicates, e.g. kaolin, Al2 Si2 O5( OH)4). Clays develop plasticity when wet, due to a molecular film of water surrounding the clay particles, but become hard, brittle and non–plastic upon drying or firing. Most pure clay minerals are white or light-coloured, but natural clays show a variety of colours from impurities, such as a reddish or brownish colour from small amounts of iron oxide. Clay is the oldest known ceramic material. Prehistoric humans discovered the useful properties of clay and used it for making pottery. The term Moor, derived from the ancient Mauri, is an exonym first used by Christian Europeans to designate the Muslim inhabitants of the Maghreb, the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily and Malta during the Middle Ages.
