Public art is art in any Media (arts), media whose form, function and meaning are created for the general public through a public process. It is a specific art genre with its own professional and critical discourse. Public art is visually and physically accessible to the public; it is installed in public space in both outdoor and indoor settings. Public art seeks to embody public or universal concepts rather than commercial, partisan or personal concepts or interests. George William Hill (sculptor)
George William Hill (1861 in Shipton, Eastern Townships, Quebec – 1934) was a Canadian sculptor. He was known as one of Canada's foremost sculptor during the first half of the 20th century, because of his numerous public memorials. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He traveled to Paris in 1889 to study at the École nationale des beaux-arts and at the Académie Julian, and returned to Montreal in 1894 to open his workshop and begin producing public memorials. Place du Canada (part of Dominion Square until 1967) is a large urban square in downtown Montreal. Overview At it is slightly larger than the adjacent Dorchester Square, with a more varied topography due to a downward slope towards De la Gauchetière Street. Place du Canada also differs from Dorchester Square in having manicured, though densely packed, pockets of flora arranged to impede direct lines of sight and diffuse pedestrian traffic. The French term ''place'' can roughly be translated as denoting a plaza, which has a different legal definition from squares or parks in Montreal. René Lévesque Park
__NOTOC__ René Lévesque Park (french: Parc René-Lévesque) is an urban park in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located in the borough of Lachine on a jetty between the Saint Lawrence River and the end of the Lachine Canal. Approximately in area, it is named after René Lévesque, the prime minister of Quebec from 1976 to 1985. The park features a bicycle path, an arboretum and several species of birds. Road access to the park is mainly through the Chemin du Canal, an extension of Saint Patrick Street. History The jetty was created in 1883 during a late expansion of the Lachine Canal. A parallel jetty, created in 1848 during the canal's first major expansion, is used as a yacht club. The Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium (french: Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan) is the successor to the Montreal Planetarium, and is located in the Espace pour la Vie, near the Olympic Stadium and the Biodome in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The new installation has two separate theatres as well as exhibits on space and astronomy. It was officially opened in April 2013.
