Montvale (Worcester, Massachusetts)
Montvale is a residential historic district in northwestern Worcester, Massachusetts. It is a portion of a subdivision laid out in 1897 on the estate of Jared Whitman, Jr., whose property contained a single house, now 246 Salisbury Street. The central portion of this house was built in 1851 in a conventional Greek Revival style, and was expanded with the addition of side wings by the developers of the 1897 subdivision, H. Ballard and M. O. Wheelock. Ballard and Wheelock laid out 73 lots on the Whitman property, on which a large number of fine Queen Anne Victorian and Colonial Revival houses were built. The district contains 37 properties, including the Whitman house and 36 others built between 1897 and 1924. George Clemence
George Henry Clemence (January 13, 1865 - February 2, 1924) was an architect and fellow of the American Institute of Architects who lived and practiced in Worcester, Massachusetts. Clemence was born in Worcester in 1865. He attended the public schools in Worcester and began studying in the office of architect Stephen C. Earle in 1882. He enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1886, completing his studies in architecture there in 1891. In 1892, he established his own architectural practice in Worcester. He was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He served as the president of the Worcester Branch of the AIA for a time. He was married to Anna Eliza McDonald in 1889, and they had a daughter, Hazel, in 1890. Levi Conant
Levi Leonard Conant (March 3, 1857, Littleton, Massachusetts – October 11, 1916, Worcester, Massachusetts) was an American mathematician specializing in trigonometry. Education and career He attended Phillips Academy, Andover and Dartmouth College (B.A., 1879, A.M., 1887) and later Syracuse University (Ph.D., 1893), studying mathematics. He was professor of mathematics at the Dakota School of Mines from 1887 to 1890, then attended Clark University for a year before beginning teaching at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1891, where he taught for the remainder of his life. He was head of the Mathematics Department at WPI from 1908 until his death, and was interim president from 1911 to 1913. He married twice, first in 1884 to Laura Chamberlain (died 1911) and again in 1912 to Emma B. Fisher. On October 11, 1916, aged 59, he was struck by a truck in front of his home and was killed.
