Montmagny (provincial Electoral District)
Montmagny was a provincial electoral district in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, Canada that elected members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada). Its final election was in 1970. It disappeared in the 1973 election and its successor electoral district was Montmagny-L'Islet. Chaudière-Appalaches
Chaudière-Appalaches () is an administrative region in Quebec, Canada. It comprises most of what is historically known as the "Beauce" (french: La Beauce; compare with the electoral district of Beauce). It is named for the Chaudière River and the Appalachian Mountains. Nazaire Bernatchez
Nazaire Bernatchez (February 13, 1838 – August 29, 1906) was a farmer, merchant and political figure in Quebec. He represented Montmagny in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1886 to 1897 as a Liberal. Life He was born in Saint-Thomas-de-la-Pointe-à-la-Caille, Lower Canada, the son of Jean-Baptiste Bernatchez and Marie Talbot dit Gervais, and was educated in Montmagny. In 1859, he married Henriette Couillard Després. Bernatchez was postmaster at Montmagny and was mayor of Saint-Thomas-de-la-Pointe-à-la-Caille and warden for Montmagny County from 1877 to 1883. He also operated a shipping company linking Montmagny and Quebec City. Fernand Choquette
Fernand Choquette, (October 27, 1895 – January 17, 1975) was a Canadian Quebec MNA and judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal from 1956 until 1970. He also worked as a lawyer for over 10 years and a teacher for over 20 years. Born in Montmagny, Quebec, the son of Philippe-Auguste Choquette and Marie Bender, he received a B.A. in 1915 and an LL.B in 1918 from Université Laval. He married Marguerite Vallerand in 1922. Union Nationale (Quebec)
The Union nationale () was a conservative and nationalist provincial political party in Quebec, Canada, that identified with Québécois autonomism. It was created during the Great Depression and held power in Quebec from 1936 to 1939, and from 1944 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. The party was founded by Maurice Duplessis, who led it until his death in 1959. The party was often referred to in English as the National Union, especially when it was still an electoral force, by both the media and, at times, the party. Joseph-Ernest Grégoire (July 31, 1886 – September 17, 1980) was a French Canadian politician. Background He was born in Disraeli, Quebec on July 31, 1886. He was an attorney and a professor. The Ligue nationaliste canadienne, also known as the Ligue nationaliste, was a nationalist and anti-imperialist organization in Quebec, Canada, during the early 20th century. Founded by Henri Bourassa and journalist Olivar Asselin, the newspaper '' Le Nationaliste'' was its official organ until 1910, when Bourassa founded ''Le Devoir'' which became the Ligue's mouthpiece. The party was created in 1903 to counter what was perceived to be the evils of imperialism and to instill a pan-Canadian nationalist spirit in the Francophone population. Armand Renaud Lavergne, or La Vergne (February 21, 1880 – March 5, 1935) was a Quebec lawyer, journalist and political figure. He represented Montmagny in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1904 to 1908 and as a Conservative member from 1930 to 1935. He represented Montmagny in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a Nationalist member from 1908 to 1916. His surname is given as "La Vergne" by some authoritative sources, including his National Assembly of Quebec biographical page, although these same sources spell his father's name as "Lavergne". He was born in Arthabaska, Quebec in 1880, the son of Joseph Lavergne and Émilie Barthe, who was the daughter of Joseph-Guillaume Barthe.
