Monti Rock
The Very Reverend Sir Monti Rock III (born Joseph Montanez, Jr. May 29, 1942 in The Bronx, New York City) is an American musician and performer. Life and career Born on 29 May 1942 to a Puerto Rican family in the Bronx, Rock parlayed his role as celebrity hairdresser into a role center stage. After several appearances and performances on ''The Merv Griffin Show'' beginning in 1966, Rock's wild antics, which included throwing bananas into the audience, and outrageous personality brought him to the national stage when he began appearing regularly as a guest on ''The Tonight Show''. Rock is generally considered to be one of the first disco artists to cross into the mainstream. In February 1975, Rock released '' Disco-Tex & His Sex-O-Lettes Review'', an LP of disco songs and collaboration with producer Bob Crewe and featuring musician Jerry Corbetta of Sugarloaf. ''The Merv Griffin Show'' is an American television talk show starring Merv Griffin. The series ran from October 1, 1962 to March 29, 1963 on NBC, May 10, 1965 to July 4, 1969 in first-run syndication, from August 18, 1969 to February 11, 1972 at 11:30 PM ET weeknights on CBS and again in first-run syndication from February 14, 1972 to September 5, 1986. Disco-Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes were a disco musical ensemble, group of the 1970s, featuring Monti Rock III (born "Joseph Montanez Jr."). The band is best known for their two disco hits "Get Dancin'" and "I Wanna Dance Wit' Choo (Doo Dat Dance)". Career The Sex-O-Lettes group included Bob Crewe, Cidny Bullens, Cidny "Cid" Bullens (then known as Cindy Bullens), and Kenny Nolan; Sir Monti Rock III was "Disco-Tex." Robert Stanley Crewe (November 12, 1930 – September 11, 2014) was an American songwriter, dancer, singer, manager, and record producer. He was known for producing, and co-writing with Bob Gaudio, a string of Top 10 singles for the Four Seasons. Jerry A. Corbetta (September 23, 1947 – September 16, 2016) was an American singer-songwriter, keyboardist and organist, record producer— best known as a frontman for the Colorado rock band Sugarloaf, best known for their classic rock hit “Green-Eyed Lady.” Corbetta also toured for nearly five years with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons as the “fifth season” nicknamed “Guido” by Frankie Valli. Sugarloaf was an American rock band that originated under the name Chocolate Hair in 1968. The band, which formed in Denver, Colorado, scored two Top 10 hits, with the singles " Green-Eyed Lady" and "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You". Moonrakers and Chocolate Hair Lead vocalist and keyboardist Jerry Corbetta, along with guitarist Bob Webber, played together in the Denver-based band The Moonrakers. The Moonrakers had previously released 4 singles on Tower; three of the songs being collected in 2005 on the Colorado garage rock compilation album '' Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 18'' and another having been released earlier on the '' Pebbles Volume 10'' LP. Studio 54 is a Broadway theater and a former disco nightclub at 254 West 54th Street in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Operated by the Roundabout Theatre Company, Studio 54 has 1,006 seats on two levels. The theater was designed by Eugene De Rosa for producer Fortune Gallo and opened in 1927 as the Gallo Opera House. The current Broadway theater is named after a nightclub on the same site, founded by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, which operated within the theater's space in the late 1970s and the 1980s.
