The Faculty of Engineering at Monash University is one of the largest engineering faculties in Australia, with over 6,700 students in 2015. The faculty was established when the university opened in 1961. It offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including bachelor's degrees, Masters by coursework and research and PhDs. Undergraduate students can choose from thirteen engineering specialisations at the end of their first year. Monash University () is a public research university based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Named for prominent World War I general Sir John Monash, it was founded in 1958 and is the second oldest university in the state. University Rover Challenge
The University Rover Challenge (URC) by the Mars Society is a robotics competition for university level students that challenges teams to design and build a rover that would be of use to early explorers on Mars. The competition is held annually at the Mars Desert Research Station, outside Hanksville, Utah in the United States. The site was selected by the Mars Society for its geographic similarity to Mars: In addition to being a largely barren desert area, the soil in the area has a chemical composition similar to Martian soil. Freddy Boey
Professor Freddy Boey (Chinese: 梅彦昌) is the Deputy President (Innovation & Enterprise) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), overseeing the University’s initiatives and activities in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and research translation, as well as graduate studies. He will become the President of the City University of Hong Kong. He was previously the Senior Vice President (Graduate Education and Research Translation) of NUS. Before joining NUS in 2018, Boey was Deputy President and Provost of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from July 2011 to September 2017. Prior to these appointments, he was the Chair of NTU's School of Materials Science and Engineering from 2005 to 2010. A Professor of Materials Engineering, Boey graduated from Monash University, Australia, with a First Class Honours degree in Materials Engineering in 1980. Alan Finkel
Alan Simon Finkel (born 17 January 1953) is an Australian neuroscientist, inventor, researcher, entrepreneur, educator, policy advisor, and philanthropist. He was Australia’s Chief Scientist from 2016 to 2020. Prior to his appointment, his career included Chancellor of Monash University, President of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE), and CEO and founder of Axon Instruments, and CTO for the electric car start-up Better Place Australia. Precious Plastic
Precious Plastic is an open hardware plastic recycling project and is a type of open source digital commons project. The project was started in 2013 by Dave Hakkens and is now in its fourth iteration. It relies on a series of machines and tools which grind, melt, and inject recycled plastic, allowing for the creation of new products out of recycled plastic on a small scale. History In 2012, Dave Hakkens started working on Precious Plastic as a part of his studies at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. The project was released in 2013 as Version 1.0. The work on version 2 was started in 2015 and was released in March 2016. In 2016, Precious Plastic also created a marketplace called Bazar for selling machines and products targeted to DIY designers to recycle plastic. Robogals
Robogals is an international student-run organisation that aims to inspire, engage and empower young women to consider studying engineering and related fields. Its primary activity is interactive, engineering based workshops for girls aged between 8-18 (depending on location). Robogals has chapters at 31 universities across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Kenya, South Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia and the Philippines. These chapters fall into three regions - Robogals Asia Pacific, Robogals EMEA (Europe, Middle East, & Africa), and Robogals North America. Formula SAE Australasia (FSAE-A) is the Australian event of the US-based Formula SAE and has been running since 2000 by SAE Australasia. Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) is Australia’s national research evaluation framework, developed and administered by the Australian Research Council (ARC). The first full round of ERA occurred in 2010, and subsequent rounds followed in 2012, 2015 and 2018. A round was scheduled for 2023, but in September 2022 the ARC announced that this would be postponed as they were transitioning the ERA process to a more robust and data driven model. An electron microscope is a microscope that uses a beam of accelerated electrons as a source of illumination. As the wavelength of an electron can be up to 100,000 times shorter than that of visible light photons, electron microscopes have a higher resolving power than light microscopes and can reveal the structure of smaller objects.
