''Mommy Is at the Hairdresser's'' (french: Maman est chez le coiffeur) is a 2008 drama directed by Léa Pool. Synopsis The film takes place in the summer of 1966, in Beloeil, Québec, where a young girl named Élise is enjoying summer vacation. Suddenly her mother leaves her family to pursue her journalism career in London. Her urge to leave is triggered when she coincidentally listens in on a conversation between her husband and his male lover. In a society still entrenched by taboos on sexual orientation, the mother flees the situation, abandoning Élise and her two younger brothers behind, in their father's care. It's then that Élise becomes more aware of the dreams, sorrows, and lies of the people closest to her. Her brother Coco stubbornly seeks refuge in constructing a supercar, and the youngest, Benoît, plummets deep into his own internal world, retreating ever-further in the furnace room of their house. Léa Pool
Léa Pool C.M. (born 8 September 1950) is a Swiss-Canadian filmmaker who taught film at the Université du Québec à Montréal. She has directed several documentaries and feature films, many of which have won significant awards including the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, and she was the first woman to win the prize for Best Film at the Quebec Cinema Awards. Pool's films often opposed stereotypes and refused to focus on heterosexual relations, preferring individuality. Early life Pool was born in Soglio, Switzerland in 1950, and raised in Lausanne. Her father was Jewish and a Holocaust survivor from Poland; her mother's family was Christian of Swiss descent and she chose to use her mother's last name. Jacques Prévert (; 4 February 1900 – 11 April 1977) was a French poet and screenwriter. His poems became and remain popular in the French-speaking world, particularly in schools. His best-regarded films formed part of the poetic realist movement, and include '' Les Enfants du Paradis'' (1945). He published his first book in 1946. Life and education Prévert was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine and grew up in Paris. After receiving his ''Certificat d'études'' upon completing his primary education, he quit school and went to work in Le Bon Marché, a major department store in Paris. In 1918, he was called up for military service in the First World War. After this, he was sent to the Near East to defend French interests there. He died of lung cancer in Omonville-la-Petite, on 11 April 1977. The 29th Genie Awards were held on April 4, 2009, to honour Canadian films released in 2008. Beloeil, Quebec
Beloeil (; ) is city in Quebec, Canada. It is a suburb of Montreal, on the South Shore and is on the Richelieu River, east of Montreal. According to the official Commission de toponymie du Québec, the name is written Belœil with an oe ligature; however, other sources avoid the ligature, including the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the town's own official website. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 20,783. It is part of the Regional County Municipality of La Vallée-du-Richelieu, within the Administrative Region of Montérégie.
