Moline Swedish Lutheran Cemetery
The Moline Swedish Lutheran Cemetery was established in Elroy, Texas in 1897. It was originally an annex to the Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Austin, Texas. The Swedish population began to move away from the area in the 1930s, and by the 1950s, the congregation was too small to sustain the church. The church was dismantled after closing in 1955. The remaining congregation became the charter members of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas and many of its members became stewards of the site. Swedish settlement in Elroy, Texas The Swedish migration to central Texas was largely fueled by the work of Swante Magnus Swenson who came to America in 1836. Swenson eventually settled in Austin, Texas and established numerous successful business endeavors with his uncle Swante Palm. Elroy, Texas
Elroy is a small unincorporated area, unincorporated community south of Austin, Texas, Austin in southeastern Travis County, Texas, United States. General Antonio López de Santa Anna gave modern-day Elroy to a loyal officer, who swapped it for a horse and saddle to return to Mexico. The Elroy community, also known as Driskill, Dutch Waterhole, or Hume, was established 1892, named by a local store owner after his son, Leroy. A post office opened in Elroy in 1899, with George L. Hume as postmaster. This post office was discontinued in 1902, and mail was sent to Del Valle. In 1907, Elroy had a two-teacher school, for 107 white students, and a one-teacher school for 61 black students. Elroy schools were later consolidated in 1961 with the Colorado district, which the next year became the Del Valle Independent School District. Gethsemane Lutheran Church
Gethsemane Lutheran Church is a historic Lutheran church in downtown Austin, Texas. Designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places (together with neighboring Luther Hall), the building currently holds offices of the Texas Historical Commission. History The first Swedish Lutheran Church in Austin began meeting in 1868. In late 1882 the Swedish Lutherans decided to build a new meeting place near the Texas State Capitol grounds. Construction was completed the following year, after which the congregation occupied the building. A second structure, named Luther Hall, was built adjacent to the main building in 1940 to provide additional meeting and activity space. SMS Ranches
The SMS Ranches are a famous group of cattle ranches located in West Texas. Background Swante M. Swenson migrated to America from Sweden during 1836. In 1850 Swenson moved to Austin, Texas and established a mercantile business with his uncle Swante Palm. While running the business, Swenson continued to buy railroad land and then bought school scripts to acquire additional property. In 1854 Svenson invested in the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway, which gained him acres of land in northwestern and western Texas. SMS Ranches eventually became one of the largest landowners in Texas. At their peak, the SMS Ranches occupy considerable portions of twelve counties in the lower plains area of West Texas and comprise more than . Samuel Houston
Samuel Houston (, ; March 2, 1793 – July 26, 1863) was an American general and statesman who played an important role in the Texas Revolution. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas, the only individual to be elected governor of two different states in the United States. Born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, Houston and his family migrated to Maryville, Tennessee, when Houston was a teenager. Houston later ran away from home and spent about three years living with the Cherokee, becoming known as Raven.
