Mohammad-Reza Gharaei Ashtiani
Mohammad-Reza Gharaei Ashtiani ( fa, محمدرضا قرایی آشتیانی) is a member of the Iranian military with the rank of Brigadier General who has served as the minister of defence since 2021. Ashtiani was sworn in on August 25, 2021, replacing Brigadier General Amir Hatami who held role since 2017. Military career Ashtiani was promoted to the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Islamic Republic of Iran (Artesh) on July 2, 2019, following a decree by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Ashtiani replaced Major General Ataollah Salehi. He was chosen to be the Minister of Defense by President Ebrahim Raisi and then was approved for the position and took office on August 25, 2021. Amir (Iranian Army)
Amir ( fa, امير), previously known as Timsar ( fa, تيمسار), is the Honorific, honorific title used for Officer (armed forces), officer of highest military ranks, high rank, ranking Second brigadier general (Iran), 2nd Brigadier General and higher in the Islamic Republic of Iran Army. The title is also used to address Law Enforcement Force of Islamic Republic of Iran commanders, except for those who previously have served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, where "''Sardar (IRGC), Sardar''" is equivalent to the title. Amir Hatami ( fa, امیر حاتمی) is an Iranian Islamic Republic of Iran Army, regular army (''Artesh'') officer with the rank of Brigadier general and Advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces of Army Affairs and the former Ministry of Defense (Iran), minister of defense of Iran. He was designated as the defense minister by President Hassan Rouhani on 8 August 2017 and gained vote of confidence from the Iranian Parliament, parliament on 20 August 2017, with 261 yes, 10 nays, 13 abstentions and 4 invalid votes.
