Moffat
Moffat ( gd, Mofad) is a burgh and parish in Dumfriesshire, now part of the Dumfries and Galloway local authority area in Scotland. It lies on the River Annan, with a population of around 2,500. It was a centre of the wool trade and a spa town. Moffat is around to the southeast of Glasgow, southwest of Edinburgh, northeast of Dumfries and northwest of Carlisle. The Moffat House Hotel, located at the northern end of the High Street, was designed by John Adam. The nearby Star Hotel, a mere 20 ft (6 m) wide, was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat won the Britain in Bloom contest in 1996. Moffat is home to Moffat toffee. The town is held to be the ancestral seat of Clan Moffat. The Devil's Beef Tub near Moffat was used by the members of Clan Moffat and later the members of Clan Johnstone to hoard cattle stolen in predatory raids. Sarah Moffat (born Clémence Moffat; July 1882 –Unknown), also known as Sarah Delice and Clémence Dumas, is a fictional character in the ITV drama '' Upstairs, Downstairs'' and its spin-off '' Thomas & Sarah''. She was portrayed by Pauline Collins. Early life Sarah was the daughter of Albert Moffat and Marianne Dumas, who said she was the granddaughter of Alexandre Dumas, she was baptized as Clémence Moffat. Her parents met at the Theatre Royal in 1879, and Clémence was conceived about three months before her parents' marriage and born in July 1882. She had two younger siblings, a brother Charlie, who was born in 1887, and a sister named Sophia. Charlie, whom she had to spend much time in her childhood looking after due to his ill health, died in the final days of 1899; and Sophia later married. It was discovered on 6 August 1978, by astronomers at the Perth Observatory in Bickley, Australia. The likely S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 5.19 hours. It was named for Australian Ethelwin Moffatt, a benefactor of the discovering observatory. ''Boyne'' was launched at Calcutta in 1807. In 1809 she sailed to England. She was sold to the Danes, but by 1811 was under English ownership under the name ''Moffat'' (or ''Moffatt''). She then made seven voyages as a "regular ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). After the EIC exited its maritime activities in 1833–34, ''Moffat'' made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia: one voyage to Port Jackson and three to Van Diemen's Land. She also made at least one voyage carrying immigrants to South Australia, and later regularly traded between Liverpool and Bombay. She was last listed in 1856. Moffat Toffee
Moffat toffee is a boiled sweet made in the Scottish town of Moffat. The confection is notable for its tangy but sweet centre which gives the sweet its unusual flavour. The Moffat Toffee old family recipe is thought to have been used for the first time commercially by present owner Blair Blacklock’s great-grandmother, Janet Cook Johnstone, around the late 19th century. The toffee was made by hand in batches of about 7 lbs (3 kilos) at the time. It was sold mainly in uncut flat rounds of varying sizes. It is still made in Moffat and over 300 kilos are made of the sweet every week. The Moffat Library, officially Moffat Library of Washingtonville, serves a population of 25,000 people in the village of that name in Orange County, New York, as well as the surrounding towns of Blooming Grove, Hamptonburgh and New Windsor. It is located in the center of town, at the intersection of NY 208 and NY 94. It boasts one Louis Comfort Tiffany-designed stained glass window and one Belcher mosaic stained glass window, although they were not part of the library's original design.
