"Modern Times" is the name of a 2004 song recorded by the Californian singer J-five. Released in 2004 as the first single from his debut album ''Sweet Little Nothing'' on which it is the third track, "Modern Times" achieved a success in many European countries, topping the charts in France, traditionally a nation where Chaplin films are most popular. Release The song is a tribute to Charlie Chaplin, and particularly his film '' Modern Times''. The chorus of the song is the original recording of Chaplin's gibberish singing from the end of the film (the first time Chaplin's voice had been heard in any of his films, using a deliberately vague mixture of languages). A music video was produced to illustrate this track, using the appropriate scene from the Chaplin film with the exclusive participation of Dolores Chaplin. Jonathan Kovacs (1982, Los Angeles), known as J-five, is an American singer. Biography Jonathan was born in 1982 in Los Angeles. He started his singing career in early 2004 with the song " Modern Times", which was a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. The song had success in a few European countries, peaking at number one in France and reaching silver status. That year he also released his first album, ''Sweet Little Nothing'', which mixes rock, rap, funk, jazz and folk sounds. His father and mother, from France and Austria respectively, introduced him to groups such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones, which would later prove very influential to his music. He attended North Hollywood High School. He has three sisters. Alternative Hip Hop
Alternative hip hop (also known as alternative rap) is a subgenre of hip hop music that encompasses a wide range of styles that are not typically identified as mainstream. AllMusic defines it as comprising " hip hop groups that refuse to conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, bass, hardcore, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres drawing equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, and even folk." Alternative hip hop developed in the late 1980s and experienced a degree of mainstream recognition during the early-to-mid 1990s. While some groups such as Arrested Development and The Fugees managed to achieve commercial success before breaking up, many alternative rap acts tend to be embraced by alternative rock listeners other than hip-hop or pop audiences. Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. (16 April 188925 December 1977) was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the era of silent film. He became a worldwide icon through his screen persona, the Tramp, and is considered one of the film industry's most important figures. ''Modern Times'' is a 1936 American part-talkie satirical romantic black comedy film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin in which his iconic Little Tramp character struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world. The film is a commentary on the desperate employment and financial conditions many people faced during the Great Depression — conditions created, in Chaplin's view, by the efficiencies of modern industrialization. The movie stars Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Tiny Sandford and Chester Conklin. It is notable for being the last time that Chaplin portrayed the Tramp character and for being the first time Chaplin's voice is heard on film.
