Modern Pentathlon At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Women's
The inaugural women's modern pentathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney was held on October 1st. Three venues were used: The Dome and Exhibition Complex (fencing and shooting), Sydney International Aquatic Centre (swimming) and Sydney Baseball Stadium (horse-riding and cross-country running). Stephanie Cook from Great Britain won the gold medal in the first-ever women's event, with a score of 5,318 points. Competition format The modern pentathlon consisted of five events, with all five held in one day. * Shooting: A 4.5 mm air pistol shooting (the athlete must hit 20 shots, one at each target). The score was based on the number of shots hitting at each target. * Fencing: A round-robin, one-touch épée competition. The score was based on winning percentage. * Swimming: A 200 m freestyle race. Pernille Svarre (born 19 November 1961) is a Danish athlete who has specialized in triathlon and modern pentathlon. She competed in the modern pentathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and has been Danish modern pentathlon champion 12 times between 1980 and 2014. Kitty Chiller
Kitty Chiller (born 2 October 1964) is a former modern pentathlete who represented Australia at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In 2013, she was named as the Chef de Mission for Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Personal life Chiller was born in Melbourne. She completed an arts degree in criminology and Latin at the University of Melbourne in 1985. Both of her elder sisters died of cancer, aged 49 and 53. Athletic career Chiller first competed internationally while she was a student at university. Initially she took part in the sport of aquathon before she joined the University of Melbourne fencing club and began her modern pentathlon career.
