Missouri Gubernatorial Election, 1908
The 1908 Missouri gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1908 and resulted in a victory for the Republican nominee, Missouri Attorney General Herbert S. Hadley, over the Democratic candidate, former Congressman William S. Cowherd, and several other candidates representing minor parties. This election broke a string of eleven consecutive Democratic governors, as it was the first election since 1870 which did not result in a victory by the Democratic nominee (no Democrat had run in 1870). The Office of the Missouri Attorney General was created in 1806 when Missouri was part of the Louisiana Territory. Missouri's first Constitution in 1820 provided for an appointed attorney general, but since the 1865 Constitution, the Attorney General has been elected. As of January 2021, there have been 43 attorneys general in Missouri. Eric S. Schmitt was appointed to become the 43rd Attorney General in January 2019 filling the mid-term vacancy created by Josh Hawley's election to the United States Senate. A minor party is a political party that plays a smaller (in some cases much smaller, even insignificant in comparison) role than a major party in a country's politics and elections. The difference between minor and major parties can be so great that the membership total, donations, and the candidates that they are able to produce or attract are very distinct. 1870 Missouri Gubernatorial Election
The 1870 Missouri gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 1870 and resulted in a victory for the Liberal Republican nominee, former Senator Benjamin Gratz Brown, over incumbent Republican Governor Joseph W. McClurg. The election centered on the restoration of political rights for Confederates and Confederate sympathizers, leading to a split in the state Republican Party. In addition to support for re-enfranchisement, Liberals supported tariff reform and were critical of President Ulysses S. Grant, particularly his federal appointments policy. The election grew to become a referendum on Grant's presidency, and Brown's landslide victory would lay the ground for the formation of the national Liberal Republican Party which challenged Grant in the 1872 presidential election. William Lincoln Garver was an American architect, civil engineer, author, socialist leader, and political candidate from Missouri. He was primarily an architect by trade, and learned while working under his uncle, architect Morris Frederick Bell. Garver is probably best known for his work of occult fiction, ''Brother of the Third Degree''. He was also a prolific political activist, authoring numerous pamphlets and articles on socialism. He was an influential leader in the Socialist Party of Missouri and the Socialist Party of America’s candidate for Governor of Missouri in 1908. His papers are held by the State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.
