Missouri Southern Lions Football Seasons
The Missouri Southern Lions college football team competes as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, and represents Missouri Southern State University in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The Lions play their home games at Fred G. Hughes Stadium in Joplin, Missouri since 1975. Since their inaugural season, Missouri Southern has appeared in one NAIA Division II National Championship Game, and one NCAA Division II playoffs. For the 1968–75 seasons, Missouri Southern competed as a NAIA independent, unaffiliated with a conference. They would later join the Central States intercollegiate conference. In 1989 the Lions joined the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association, later renamed the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, and the NCAA Division II ranks. The Missouri Southern Lions football program is the intercollegiate American football team for Missouri Southern State University located in the U.S. state of Missouri. The team competes in the NCAA Division II and are members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The team plays its home games at the 7,000 seat Fred G. Hughes Stadium in Joplin, Missouri. Atiba Bradley was named the 14th head football coach in the history of Missouri Southern on February 5, 2021. History The Lions football program began in 1968. Their first head coach was Jim Johnson. Under coach Jim Frazier the Lions won the 1972 NAIA Division II football championship. Conferences From its inaugural season in 1968 until 1975, Missouri Southern played as an independent program. Central States Intercollegiate Conference
The Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC) was an American intercollegiate athletic conference affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) from 1976 to 1989. It was known to be one of the toughest NAIA conferences in the nation. History In 1976, four members from the Great Plains Athletic Conference decided to move away from that conference, which was affiliated with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and form the Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC). Those were Fort Hays State College (now Fort Hays State University), Kansas State College of Emporia (now Emporia State University), Kansas State College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) and Washburn University.
