Mississauga Fire And Emergency Services
Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) provides fire protection, technical rescue services, hazardous materials response, and first responder emergency medical assistance to the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The Fire Service was established in 1968 and formed from local departments (Cooksville, Lakeview, Malton, Meadowvale) that existed prior to the creation of Mississauga, Ontario. The Port Credit Fire Department and Streetsville Fire Departments were added upon the amalgamation of those communities with Mississauga in 1974. MFES was mainly made up of the Toronto Township Volunteer Fire Department, itself created from volunteer units in the 1870s. By 1975, Mississauga's fire service was a full-time service. Streetsville, Mississauga
Streetsville (pop. 47,327) is a neighbourhood located in the northwestern corner of the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, on the Credit River. Although Streetsville occupies the west and east banks of the river, the majority is located on the west bank of the river. A town prior to the 1974 amalgamations that formed the City of Mississauga, it seeks to keep a "small town" charm by retaining a variety of historical buildings and streetscapes. A bombing occurred at the Bombay Bhel restaurant in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, on May 24, 2018, just before 10:32 pm. The restaurant is located in a shopping plaza along Hurontario Street, the main north–south thoroughfare of Mississauga, at the intersection with Eglinton Avenue. Bombing Two people, still at large and unidentified, are suspected of detonating an improvised explosive device inside the flagship location of Bombay Bhel, a regional Indian restaurant chain, injuring 15 of the 40 people inside. Air France Flight 358 was a regularly scheduled international flight from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France, to Toronto Pearson International Airport in Ontario, Canada. On the afternoon of 2 August 2005, while landing at Pearson Airport, the Airbus A340-313E operating the route overran the runway and crashed into nearby Etobicoke Creek, approximately beyond the end of the runway. All 309 passengers and crew on board the Airbus survived, but twelve people sustained serious injuries. The accident highlighted the vital role played by highly trained flight attendants during an emergency. Due to inclement weather, 540 flights departing and arriving at Pearson were cancelled. 1979 Mississauga Train Derailment
The Mississauga train derailment occurred on November 10, 1979, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, when a CP Rail freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and caught fire. More than 200,000 people were evacuated in the largest peacetime evacuation in North America until Hurricane Katrina. The fire was caused by a failure of the lubricating system. Air Canada Flight 189 was an Air Canada flight from Ottawa to Vancouver via Toronto and Winnipeg. On June 26, 1978, the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 operating the flight crashed on takeoff in Toronto, killing two passengers. Aircraft The aircraft involved was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 32 series, powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines and delivered new to Air Canada in April 1968. At the time of the incident the aircraft had accumulated 25,476 hours of flight time. The aircraft was registered CF-TLV and was the 289th DC-9 built at the Long Beach assembly plant. The 32 series was a stretched version of the DC-9 that was 15 feet (4.6 m) longer than the original series 10. Port Credit is a neighbourhood in the south-central part of the City of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, located at the mouth of the Credit River on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Its main intersection is Hurontario Street and Lakeshore Road, about east of the river. Until 1974, Port Credit was an incorporated town.
