The Ministry of Transport, later known as the Department of Transport, was a statutory ministry that acted as the chief transport agency of the Government of Victoria between 1958 and 1996. Originally established by the Transport Act 1951 and strengthened by the Transport Act 1983, the Ministry took on a variety of roles, coordinating the state's other transport operations and reporting to a number of Ministers throughout its history. Background The earliest transport authorities in Victoria operated under the purview of the Board of Land and Works, an innovative structure created to administer public service departments and authorities with some independence from government. John McDonald (Victorian Politician)
Sir John Gladstone Black McDonald (6 December 1898 – 23 April 1977) was 37th Premier of Victoria (leading the Country Party) from 27 June 1950 to 17 December 1952, except for a few days in October 1952 when Thomas Hollway led a brief Electoral Reform League government. McDonald came to office by defeating Hollway's Liberals, but was himself vanquished by the Labor Party under John Cain in 1952. McDonald was also Deputy Premier of Victoria from November 1947 to December 1948 under Premier Thomas Hollway. McDonald was President of the Goulburn Valley Second Eighteens Football Association from 1927 to 1933. Early life McDonald was born in Falkirk, Scotland, the son of a grocer, and was educated at Carmuirs School. Road Traffic Authority
VicRoads is a government joint venture in the state of Victoria, Australia. In the state, it is responsible for driver licensing and vehicle registration. It is owned and operated through a joint venture between the Victorian government and a consortium made up of Aware Super, Australian Retirement Trust and Macquarie Asset Management. Before July 2019, it was the road and traffic authority in Victoria, responsible also for maintenance and construction of the arterial road network, and road safety policy and research. The State Transport Authority was a Government of Victoria, State Government of Victoria owned corporate body which operated country passenger and freight trains in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. It was established under the Transport Act 1983, succeeding the Victorian Railways. The Authority commenced operations on 1 July 1983. Metropolitan Transit Authority (Victoria)
The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), known to the general public as The Met, was a Government of Victoria owned corporate body that operated suburban passenger trains, trams and buses in Victoria, Australia. It was set up under Section 15 of the Transport Act 1983 and commenced operation on 1 July 1983. It was a statutory body set up to manage the trams formerly operated by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board, the metropolitan train operations of the former VicRail, and the operations of the former Melbourne Underground Rail Loop Authority. The authority employed more than 12,000 people across five divisions in 1984/85. The aim of the authority was to integrate the provision of public transport in Melbourne. Herbert Hyland
Sir Herbert John Thornhill Hyland (15 March 1884 – 18 March 1970), storekeeper, investor, and politician, was born in 1884 at Prahran, Melbourne, second son of George Hyland, a Victorian-born painter, and his wife Mary, née Thornhill, from Ireland. Early life Herbert's grandfather was John Hyland, one of the first settlers of the South Yarra and Prahran regions. The Hyland family also participated in the 1 November 1837 land sale, purchasing an allotment between Bourke St and Little Bourke st, Melbourne (after Williamstown nomination of Melbourne's first Magistrate, and were the original owners of the Freemason's Tavern, South Yarra.
