The Ministry of Health and Social Protection () is a department of the Albanian Government, charged with the responsibility to oversee the running of Albania's healthcare system, including supporting universal and affordable access to medical, pharmaceutical and hospital services, while helping people to stay healthy through health promotion. History In 1914 Prince William of Wied built a new structure, entrusting the then Minister of Health Mihal Turtulli. In 1920 with the government of the Lushnja Congress, was established the structure of the General Directorate of Health ''(DPSH)'', which functioned as such until 1944. The Ministry of Health was founded in 1944 when DPSH became a Ministry. The Ministry had its structure with 21 employees and 175 Albanian and foreign doctors practicing the activity throughout the country. Sabit Brokaj
Sabit Brokaj (7 January 1942 – 13 September 2020) was an Albanian politician, doctor, and professor. In 1991 Brokaj served as the Minister of Health of Albania. Early life Brokaj was born 7 January 1942, in Vlorë, Albania during the Italian occupation of Albania. From 1959 to 1964, Brokaj served as a medical assistant on a submarine. After graduating from the University of Tirana's medical faculty in 1969, Brokaj went on to serve as medical chief of a brigade in Shijak from 1969 to 1972. From 1972 to 1984, Brokaj worked as a cardiologist at military hospital in Tirana. He traveled to France to study cardiology in 1979 and echocardiology in 1982. During this period, Brokaj was one of Enver Hoxha's personal physicians. In 1984, Brokaj left the military to become a professor at a medical school in Tirana. According to the Constitution of Albania, citizens are entitled to healthcare. The healthcare system in Albania is primarily public. The public system is made up of three tiers: primary care, secondary care, and tertiary care. Primary healthcare covers basic health needs. Secondary healthcare is needed when seeing a specialist after being referred to by a general doctor. Tertiary healthcare funds highly specialized medical care that is needed over a long duration of time. There are over 400 public clinics that offer both primary and secondary healthcare services, along with over 40 public hospitals that offer tertiary healthcare services. Manush Myftiu
Manush Myftiu (16 January 1919 – 20 October 1997) was an Albanian politician during the country's socialist period. He served in a number of positions, most recently as the deputy prime minister. Early life Myftiu was born in Vlora to a family of Albanian Muslim landowners. In 1939 he graduated from a Classical Lycée in Rome and while in his hometown joined a communist cell. From 1940 to 1941 he studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Turin but did not complete his studies, returning to Vlora where he was obliged to join the Albanian Fascist Youth.
