The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is the ministry responsible for handling Jamaica's external relations and foreign trade. The ministry's current director is Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith. The ministry's official mission statement notes that it "is responsible for the implementation of Jamaica’s foreign policy, the management of Jamaica international relations and the promotion of its interests overseas." History After achieving independence from the United Kingdom in August 1962, Jamaica immediately established its foreign ministry, then known as the Ministry of External Affairs. In 1976, the government changed the ministry's name to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and eventually added "and Foreign Trade" sometime later to reflect the full scope of its mission. Coat Of Arms Of Jamaica
Considered as a legacy from the British with slight modifications, the Jamaican coat of arms was granted to Jamaica in 1661 under Royal Warrant. The original was designed by William Sancroft, then Archbishop of Canterbury. Michael Manley
Michael Norman Manley (10 December 1924 – 6 March 1997) was a Jamaican politician who served as the fourth Prime Minister of Jamaica from 1972 to 1980 and from 1989 to 1992. Manley championed a democratic socialist program, and has been described as a populist. According to opinion polls, he remains one of Jamaica's most popular prime ministers. Early life Michael Manley was the second son of premier Norman Washington Manley and artist Edna Manley. He studied at Jamaica College between 1935 and 1943. He attended the Antigua State College and then served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. In 1945, he enrolled at the London School of Economics. Kenneth Lee O'Neil Baugh, (24 February 1941 – 1 September 2019) was a Jamaican politician and surgeon. A member of the Jamaica Labour Party, he served as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Minister of Health. Early life Kenneth Lee O'Neil Baugh was born on 24 February 1941 in Montego Bay, St. James, Jamaica. He attended Cornwall College and the University of the West Indies. Before entering politics, Baugh worked as a surgeon and Senior Medical Officer at the Cornwall Regional Hospital. Career Baugh served as general secretary and chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party. George Anthony Hylton (born 27 April 1957) is a Jamaican politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2007. Dudley Joseph Thompson, OJ, QC (19 January 1917 – 20 January 2012) was a Jamaican Pan-Africanist, politician and diplomat, who made a contribution to jurisprudence and politics in the Caribbean, Africa and elsewhere internationally.
