Ministry Of Defence (Brunei)
The Ministry of Defence (abbreviated as MinDef; ms, Kementerian Pertahanan) is a cabinet-level ministry in the Government of Brunei responsible for the country's national security and military forces, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF). It is Brunei's ministry of defence. It was established immediately upon Brunei's independence on 1 January 1984. The current leadership consists of a minister, whereby the incumbent is Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei and Supreme Commander of RBAF; and a deputy minister. It is headquartered in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan. Leadership The first Minister of Defence upon the inception of the ministry was Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III who was the late father of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and had been the preceding Sultan of Brunei until his abdication in 1967. The Government of Brunei Darussalam is the union government created by the constitution of Brunei where by the Sultan of Brunei is both head of state and head of government (Prime Minister of Brunei). Executive power is exercised by the government. Brunei has a legislative council with 36 appointed members, that only has consultative tasks. Under Brunei's 1959 constitution, His Majesty Hassanal Bolkiah, is the head of state with full executive authority, including emergency powers since 1962. The Sultan's role is enshrined in the national philosophy known as " Melayu Islam Beraja" (MIB), or Malay Islamic Monarchy. Hassanal Bolkiah ibni Omar Ali Saifuddien III ( Jawi: ; born 15 July 1946) is the 29th and current Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei since 1967 and the Prime Minister of Brunei since independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. He is one of the last absolute monarchs in the world. The eldest son of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and ''Raja Isteri'' (Queen) Pengiran Anak Damit, he succeeded to the throne as the sultan of Brunei following the abdication of his father on 5 October 1967. Sultan Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien ( Jawi: ; 23 September 1914 – 7 September 1986) was the 28th Sultan of Brunei, reigning from 4 June 1950 until his abdication from the throne on 5 October 1967. He was also Brunei's first Minister of Defence after the country's independence. He was known as "The Architect of Modern Brunei",, "The Royal Poet", and "The Father of Independence". The sultan of Brunei is the monarchical head of state of Brunei and head of government in his capacity as prime minister of Brunei. Since independence from the British in 1984, only one sultan has reigned, though the royal institution dates back to the 14th century.
