The Ministry of Defence ( pt, Ministério da Defesa) of Brazil is the civilian cabinet organization responsible for managing the Military of Brazil. It is Brazil's ministry of defence. It is headed by the Minister of Defence. The Ministry of Defence has three major components under its command structure – the Army Command, the Navy Command, and the Air Force Command. Among the many agencies operated by the Ministry of Defence are the National Civil Aviation Agency, the Infraero, and the Superior War School. The ministry is headquartered in the Ministries Esplanade section of the Monumental Axis, Brasília. The Ministry of War () was a government ministry of the Kingdom of Brazil, and later of the Empire of Brazil and the Federative Republic of Brazil. It was created in 1815 to give the Kingdom of Brazil greater military autonomy from Portugal, and to unify the Armada (Navy) and Army under one power. It was renamed "Ministry of the Army" under the Costa e Silva administration and later incorporated into the Ministry of Defence in 1999. National Defence Policy
Military policy (also called defence policy or defense policy) is public policy dealing with multinational security and the military. It comprises the measures and initiatives that governments do or do not take in relation to decision-making and strategic goals, such as when and how to commit national armed forces. Military policy is used to ensures the retention of independence in national development and the alleviation of hardships imposed from hostile and aggressive external actors. The Defence Ministry (or a synonymous organisation) minister is the primary decision-maker for the national military policy. Nelson Azevedo Jobim (born in Santa Maria, RS, 12 April 1946) is a Brazilian jurist, politician and businessman. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (; born Luiz Inácio da Silva; 27 October 1945), known mononymously as Lula, is a Brazilian politician, trade unionist, and former metalworker who is the president-elect of Brazil. José Viegas Filho (born 14 October 1942 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian diplomat. José Viegas served as Brazilian Ambassador to Denmark (1995–1998), to Peru (1998–2001) and to Russia (2001–2002).
