Minister of Pensions and National Health was an office in the Cabinet of Canada from 1928 to 1944 who oversaw the Department of Pensions and National Health. Prior to 1928, certain responsibilities of the Pensions and National Health portfolio were carried out by the now-defunct post of Minister of Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment. That office, along with ''The Department of Health Act'', were abolished and the office of Minister of Pensions and National Health was created on 1928 June 11 by Statute 18-19 George V, c. 39. In 1944, the portfolio was divided to create the posts of Minister of National Health and Welfare and Minister of Veterans Affairs. Minister Of Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment (Canada)
The Department of Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment was established by the Dominion Government of Canada in 1918 to handle the major problem of returning Canadian servicemen to civilian life after the First World War. In 1928 it merged with the Department of Health to form the Department of Pensions and National Health, with its former responsibilities being carried out by the Pensions Division (later Pensions Branch). The Department employed 9,035 staff in March 1920, its peak period of operation, rapidly reducing to 5,485 by March 1921. Medical facilities The Department took over responsibility for the Military Hospitals Commission, which ran convalescent hospitals and homes for wounded soldiers. James Horace King
James Horace King, (January 18, 1873 – July 14, 1955) was a Canadian physician and parliamentarian. Born in Chipman, New Brunswick, James King was the son of George Gerald King, a businessman and Canadian politician in his own right. The elder King was a Liberal Member of Parliament in the nineteenth century, and a Senator from 1896 until his death in 1928. The younger King earned his MD from McGill University in 1895. James Ralston
James Layton Ralston (September 27, 1881 – May 22, 1948) was a Canadian lawyer, soldier and politician. Biography Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Ralston graduated from law school at Dalhousie University in 1903 and practised law in Amherst. Ralston was the federal Liberal candidate for Cumberland in the 1908 federal election but was unsuccessful in being elected. Richard Bedford Bennett, 1st Viscount Bennett, (July 3, 1870 – June 26, 1947), was a Canadian lawyer, businessman, philanthropist, and politician who served as the 11th prime minister of Canada from 1930 to 1935. Donald Matheson Sutherland, (December 3, 1879 – June 4, 1970) was a Canadian physician and politician. Biography He ran for public office, as a Laurier Liberal, in the 1917 federal election held as a result of the Conscription Crisis of 1917, but was defeated in the riding of Oxford North. By 1921, he had changed allegiances to the Conservatives and, in the 1925 general election, won the seat of Oxford North and became a Tory Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Canada. Charles Gavan "Chubby" Power, (18 January 1888 – 30 May 1968) was a Canadian politician and ice hockey player. Many members of his family, including his father, two brothers, a son and a grandson, all had political careers; two of his brothers also played ice hockey.
