Smooth (singer)
Juanita Stokes (born 1972), currently known as Needa S. (formerly Smooth), is an American singer and rapper. She is the daughter of actress Irene Stokes and younger sister of music executive Chris Stokes (record producer), Chris Stokes. Career Stokes began her career as MC Smooth, signing a record deal with the independent label Crush Music in 1990. She released her debut single "Smooth & Legit" that year, which peaked at #11 on the U.S. Rap chart. Her debut album ''Smooth & Legit'' followed on April 27, 1990 (peaking at #72 on the R&B/Hip Hop chart) and was produced by her brother Chris Stokes and Arabian Prince. Two singles "You Gotta Be Real" and "Where is the Money?" followed but did not garner much airplay. Three years later, she signed a major label deal with Jive Records and began work on her sophomore album, dropping the MC from her moniker. ''Smooth'' is the self-titled third album by Smooth (singer), Smooth. It was released on August 1, 1995, by Jive Records and produced by Chris Stokes (record producer), Chris Stokes. ''Smooth'' reached No. 35 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 17 on the Top Heatseekers chart in ''Billboard'' Magazine. The album is best remembered for its controversial lead single "Mind Blowin' (Smooth song), Mind Blowin'" which peaked at No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and No. 7 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. "Undercover Lover" and "Love Groove" were also released as singles. Jive Records
Jive Records was an American independent record label founded by Clive Calder in 1981 as a subsidiary to the Zomba Group. In the US, the label had offices in New York City and Chicago. Jive was best known for its successes with hip hop, R&B, and dance acts in the 1980s and 1990s, along with teen pop and boy bands during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Jive was acquired by Bertelsmann Music Group in 2002. In 2008, BMG itself was bought out by Sony Music Entertainment. Jive Records thereupon remained a unit wholly owned by Sony up until the label’s dissolution in 2011, when Jive was absorbed into RCA Records. Strawberries (song)
"Strawberries" is the lead single released from Smooth's fourth and final album, ''Reality''. The lyrics are about eating strawberries with Hennessy with sexual overtones. The song became the most successful of Smooth's career, making it to 49 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and 17 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. This song contains a sample from "Where There Is Love" by Patrice Rushen. Two remixes for the song were made. The more popular Computer remix was produced by Darren "Nitro" Clowers and featured NBA star Shaquille O'Neal and Roger Troutman. The other remix was produced by Marc Kinchen and featured Smooth's labelmate, Rufas Blaq.
