Milner Gray (designer)
Milner Connorton Gray CBE (1899–1997) was one of the key figures of British industrial design in the 20th century, having played an important role in establishing design as a recognized profession, the emergence of British design consultancies, and the development of Design Management. Background Gray studied painting and design at Goldsmiths College School of Art, London University, where he was a fellow student and friend of the artist-designer Graham Sutherland. During the First World War he served in the Royal Engineers where, like other celebrated artists and designers in both World Wars, he was involved in camouflage work. In 1930 he became a founder member of the Society of Industrial Artists (SIA, see Chartered Society of Designers), which sought to gain professional recognition for the designer in industry. Milner Gray CBE (11 May 1871 – 10 April 1943) was a British Liberal politician. Family life and business Gray was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, the son of a Baptist Minister,''Who was Who'', OUP 2007 although he himself was a Methodist in religion. He was educated at Greenwich. In 1902, he married Elizabeth Eleanor Luck of Lewisham. They had no children. In business, Gray was Chairman of Frank Harden Ltd of Luton (manufacturers of ladies' hats) and a director of the United Match Industries. Politics Gray first tried to enter Parliament in 1911.The Times, 12.4.43 At the 1918 general election, he contested Wellingborough as a Coalition Liberal, i.e. a supporter of the coalition government between those members of the Liberal Party led by David Lloyd George and the Conservatives; but he lost in a straight fight to Labour. Milner Holland
Sir Edward Milner Holland (8 September 1902 – 2 November 1969) was a British lawyer. He served as the Attorney-General of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1951 to 1969. Holland was born in Sutton, Surrey, the second son of the publisher Sir Edward John Holland, and was educated at Charterhouse School and at Hertford College, Oxford, (BA, BCL). He was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1927, and practised mainly at the Chancery bar. During World War II, he served in the British Army, rising to the rank of Brigadier and serving as the Deputy Director of Personal Services at the War Office. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1945. After the War, Holland returned to the bar and was made Queen's Counsel in 1948. He was appointed Attorney-General of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1951, and held the position until 1969. Milner Place (25 January 1930 – 28 May 2020) was an English writer best known for his poetry. He was born in Thirsk, North Yorkshire to Dorothy F. Place and Tom Place. He had three siblings, Ullin, Dorothy and David. His brother Ullin Place was well known for his work on consciousness as a process of the brain. His sister, Dorothy E. Smith was a sociologist. Life and career Early in his life he worked as a forester. From 1948 to 1950 he served in the military, he then studied briefly at an agricultural college, worked as a bartender and managed the family farm. Place lived much of his life on the sea. In 1953 he sailed to South Africa where he worked in a copper mine. In 1955 he returned to England and worked as a journalist. In 1958 he sailed to New York City and from 1958 to 1961 lived in the Bahamas. In 1961, he bought his first ship and sailed it through Miami and England to Mallorca.
