''Miles Davis in Europe'' is a live album by Miles Davis, released in 1964. It was the first full album by the first incarnation of the "Miles Davis Quintet#Second Great Quintet .281964.E2.80.9368.29, Second Quintet" featuring George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams (drummer), Tony Williams, whose first recordings with Davis had made up half of the album ''Seven Steps to Heaven.'' The final songs of the concert, "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "The Theme", were released only on the box set ''Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings of Miles Davis 1963–1964''. On the original LP, some of the tenor sax and piano solos were edited, although it still offered nearly an hour of music. Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926September 28, 1991) was an American trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz. Born in Alton, Illinois, and raised in East St. Louis, Davis left to study at Juilliard in New York City, before dropping out and making his professional debut as a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker's bebop quintet from 1944 to 1948. Shortly after, he recorded the ''Birth of the Cool'' sessions for Capitol Records, which were instrumental to the development of cool jazz. In the early 1950s, Davis recorded some of the earliest hard bop music while on Prestige Records but did so haphazardly due to a heroin addiction. "Autumn Leaves" is a popular song and jazz standard composed by Joseph Kosma in 1945 with original lyrics by Jacques Prévert in French (original French title: "Les Feuilles mortes"), and later by Johnny Mercer in English. An instrumental version by pianist Roger Williams was a number one best-seller in the US ''Billboard'' charts of 1955. Background Kosma was a native of Hungary who was introduced to Prévert in Paris. They collaborated on the song ' ("The Dead Leaves") for the 1946 film '' Les Portes de la nuit (Gates of the Night)'' where it was sung by Irène Joachim and Yves Montand. The poem was published, after the death of Jacques Prévert, in the book " Soleil de Nuit" in 1980. James Van Heusen (born Edward Chester Babcock; January 26, 1913 – February 6, 1990) was an American composer. He wrote songs for films, television and theater, and won an Emmy and four Academy Awards for Best Original Song. "I Thought About You" is a 1939 popular song composed by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Background It was one of three collaborations Van Heusen and Mercer wrote for the Mercer-Morris publishing company started by Mercer and former Warner Bros. publisher Buddy Morris. The other two were called "Blue Rain" and "Make with the Kisses". "I Thought About You" was by far the most popular of the songs. The lyrics were inspired by Mercer's train trip to Chicago. Cole Porter
Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Many of his songs became standards noted for their witty, urbane lyrics, and many of his scores found success on Broadway and in film. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, Porter defied his grandfather's wishes for him to practice law and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn to musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote the lyrics as well as the music for his songs. After a serious horseback riding accident in 1937, Porter was left disabled and in constant pain, but he continued to work. Victor Stanley Feldman (7 April 1934 – 12 May 1987) was an English jazz musician who played mainly piano, vibraphone, and percussion. He began performing professionally during childhood, eventually earning acclaim in the UK jazz scene as an adult. Feldman emigrated to the United States in the mid-1950s, where he continued working in jazz and also as a session musician with a variety of pop and rock performers. Milestones (composition)
"Milestones" is a jazz composition written by Miles Davis. It appears on the Milestones (Miles Davis album), album of the same name in 1958. It has since become a jazz standard. "Milestones" is the first example of Miles composing in a Modal jazz, modal style and experimentation in this piece led to the writing of "So What (composition), So What" from the 1959 album ''Kind of Blue''. The song's modes consist of G Dorian mode, Dorian for 16 bars, A Aeolian mode, Aeolian for another 16 bars, and then back to G Dorian for the last eight bars, then the progression repeats. Originally titled "Miles" on the initial album pressings, people soon began referring to the piece as "Milestones" rather than "Miles". On later editions of the album the title was changed.
