Miguel Alvarez Del Toro
Miguel Álvarez del Toro (Colima, Colima, August 23, 1917 – August 2, 1996, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico). Scientist cataloged by the international community as the last naturalist of the 20th century, recognized for his outstanding work in the field of zoology and nature conservation. His interest in nature, particularly that of the tropics, led him to accept a job offer in the state of Chiapas, where he stayed forever, doing a work that has become an obligatory reference for both biologists and conservationists. Dr. Álvarez del Toro was self-taught. He never attended a university, but few naturalists have reached -by direct experience- the level of knowledge that he achieved in both animal and plant groups. Tuxtla Gutiérrez
Tuxtla Gutiérrez (, ) is the capital and the largest city of the Mexican southeastern state of Chiapas. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name, the most developed and populated in the state. A busy government, commercial and services-oriented city, Tuxtla (as it is commonly known) had one of the fastest-growing rates in Mexico in the last 40 years. ''Heloderma'' is a genus of toxicoferan lizards that contains five species, all of which are venomous. It is the only extant genus of the family Helodermatidae. Description The genus ''Heloderma'' contains the Gila monster (''H. suspectum'') and four species of beaded lizards. The Gila monster is a large, stocky, most of the time slow-moving reptile that prefers arid deserts. Beaded lizards are seen to be more agile and seem to prefer more humid surroundings. The tails of all species of ''Heloderma'' are used as fat storage organs. The scales of the head, back and tail are bead-like, containing osteoderms for better protection.
