Middlesex County Courthouse (Urbanna, Virginia)
The Middlesex County Courthouse in Urbanna, Virginia was built starting in 1745. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1976. It has also been known as Old Middlesex County Courthouse and as Middlesex County Woman's Club. anaccompanying photo/ref> During the American Civil War, the building was used by Confederate troops and was shelled by Union gunboats, but was not much damaged. It has been used as a church. In 1948 it was deconsecrated and ownership was transferred to the Middlesex County Woman's Club. As of 1976 the building was used by that group as its headquarters and for community and private functions. It is located in the Urbanna Historic District. Urbanna is a town in Middlesex County, Virginia, United States. Urbanna means “City of Anne” and was named in honor of England's Queen Anne. The population was 476 at the 2010 census. Geography Urbanna is located at (37.637796, −76.573149). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), of which, 0.4 square miles (1.1 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (17.65%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 543 people, 266 households, and 160 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,286.5 people per square mile (499.2/km2). There were 354 housing units at an average density of 838.7 per square mile (325.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.58% White (U.S. Census), 3.50% Black, and 0.92% from two or more races.
