Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy For Young Men
Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men (MLCPA), originally Young Men's College Preparatory Academy at E. O. Smith (YMCPA), is a university preparatory secondary school for boys in the Fifth Ward, Houston, Texas. It is a part of the Houston Independent School District. It is named after Mickey Leland. The school opened in August, 2011 for the 6th and 9th grades, and would gradually become a middle and high school. It first opened in the E.O. Smith Education Center campus in the Fifth Ward. The district modeled the school off of the Chicago Urban Prep Academy in Chicago. KRIV (TV)
KRIV (channel 26) is a television station in Houston, Texas, United States, airing programming from the Fox network. It is owned and operated by the network's Fox Television Stations division alongside MyNetworkTV outlet KTXH (channel 20). Both stations share studios on Southwest Freeway in Houston, while KRIV's transmitter is located near Missouri City, Texas. Established in 1971 as an independent station under the KVRL call sign and later as KDOG-TV, channel 26 hit its stride after being sold to Metromedia in 1978; it was then renamed in honor of the Metromedia executive who had encouraged the company to purchase it. Metromedia started the station's news department before being sold and becoming the nucleus of the Fox network in 1986. Young Women's College Preparatory Academy
Young Women's College Preparatory Academy (YWCPA) is a secondary (middle and high) school for girls in Houston, Texas that is a part of the Houston Independent School District. It opened in 2011 in the former Contemporary Learning Center (CLC) building. The school is located in the Third Ward area. The Foundation for the Education of Young Women and HISD partnered in order to develop the school. The foundation committed $1 million to start the school. The plan initially called for the school to be housed at CLC, but the agenda items, including the plan, were tabled until December 2010. Phillis Wheatley High School is a secondary school located at 4801 Providence Street in Houston, Texas, United States with a ZIP code of 77020. Wheatley is a part of the Houston Independent School District. Wheatley, named after Phillis Wheatley, is located inside the 610 Loop in the Fifth Ward. Wheatley has a technology magnet program inherited from the closure of Middle College for Technology Careers in spring 2006; Wheatley's program began in fall 2006. Houston Defender
The ''Houston Defender'' is an African-American newspaper published weekly in Houston, Texas. The newspaper was established October 11, 1930 by C. F. Richardson Sr., who was also publisher of the ''Houston Informer''. The Defender served as a community advocate in the pre-Civil Rights era with a focus on equal rights, improved high school curricula and anti-lynching laws. Richardson died in 1939, and his son, C. F. Richardson Jr., took over the newspaper. Sonceria MessiahJiles purchased the newspaper in 1981. The 2008 readership was 60,000. In 1993 the bi-monthly ''Campus Defender'' was created for a younger audience; its contributors are middle and high school students. The publication moved online in 2008.
