Mick Murphy (Limerick Hurler)
Michael J. Murphy (1897 – 18 October 1955) was an Irish hurler who played as a goalkeeper for the Limerick senior team. Born in Limerick, Murphy first played competitive hurling in his youth. He made his first impression on the inter-county scene when he joined the Limerick senior team during a golden age between 1918 and 1923. Murphy went on to play a key role for Limerick for over a decade, and won two All-Ireland medals and two Munster medals. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on two occasions, Murphy won one Railway Cup medal. At club level he is a five-time championship medallist with Young Irelands. Murphy also lined out with St Patrick's. St Patrick's GAA (Limerick)
St Patrick's GAA ( Irish: ''CLG Naomh Pádraig'') is a Gaelic Athletic Association located in the Rhebogue area of Limerick City, Ireland. The club fields teams in both hurling and Gaelic football. History Located in the Rhebogue area on the banks of the River Shannon, St Patrick's GAA Club is one of the oldest clubs in Limerick, having been founded in 1886. It remains the oldest-surviving city club. The club enjoyed Gaelic football success in its early years, winning back-to-back Limerick SFC titles at the expense of Commercials in 1890 and 1891. Half a century passed before the club enjoyed what could arguably be described as its most successful period. Further Limerick SFC titles were won in 1943, 1944 and 1954, while St Patrick's also claimed consecutive Limerick SHC titles in 1949 and 1950. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. Presently, Ulster hold the record for the most football Railway Cup wins with 30, while Munster has won the most hurling titles with 43. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Young Irelands (Limerick) Hurlers
Young Irelands are a Gaelic Athletic Association Club based in Gowran, County Kilkenny, Ireland. Formed in 1952, they are located on the Chapel Road just outside the village. Their jersey consists of red and white vertical stripes. They are currently managed by Alan Roche. Past managers have included Pat O'Neill and Kevin Fennelly. The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1921 was the 35th series of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, Ireland's premier hurling knock-out competition. Limerick won the championship, beating Dublin 8-5 to 3-2 in the final.
