Michael O'Sullivan (jockey)
Michael O'Sullivan (21 February 2000 – 16 February 2025) was an Irish jockey who won the Supreme Novices' Hurdle and Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival. O'Sullivan died on 16 February 2025 from injuries sustained during a race at Thurles ten days earlier. Early life O'Sullivan was born in Lombardstown, County Cork and came from a family that had a long association with national hunt racing. His father, William, won the Foxhunters' Chase in 1991, on Lovely Citizen, a horse owned and bred by his grandfather Owen and trained by his uncle Eugene. O'Sullivan's cousin, Maxine, is also a Cheltenham Festival winner. O'Sullivan graduated with a degree in Agricultural Science from University College Dublin in 2022. Lombardstown () is a village west of the town of Mallow in County Cork, Ireland. Royal Bond Novice Hurdle
The Royal Bond Novice Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt racing, National Hunt Hurdling (horse race), hurdle race in Ireland which is open to Horse racing, horses aged four years or older. It is run at Fairyhouse Racecourse, Fairyhouse over a distance of about 2 miles (3,219 metres), and during its running there are ten hurdles to be jumped. The race is for Novice (racehorse), novice hurdlers, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late November or early December. The event is named after Royal Bond, a successful National Hunt horse trained by Arthur Moore in the early 1980s. It was established in 1994, and held Grade 1 status until 2023. It is usually staged on the same afternoon as the Drinmore Novice Chase and the Hatton's Grace Hurdle. Golden Cygnet Novice Hurdle
The Golden Cygnet Novice Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt novice hurdle race in Ireland which is for horses aged five years or older. It is run at Leopardstown over a distance of about 2 miles and 6 furlongs (4,426 metres). The race is scheduled to take place each year in late January or early February. The race was first run in 1999 and is named in honour of Golden Cygnet, a racehorse trained by Edward O'Grady who was fatally injured while racing in 1978. It was awarded Grade 3 status in 2003 and then raised to Grade 2 in 2008. Since 2016 the race has been sponsored and run as the Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Solicitors Novice Hurdle. Prior to 2018 it was run over 2 miles and 4 furlongs, and in 2018 it was extended to its present distance and upgraded to Grade 1 status as part of the new Dublin Racing Festival.
