Michael O'Connor (Australian Politician)
Michael O'Connor (11 November 1865 – 6 July 1940) was an Irish-Australian Member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1901 to 1904. Early life Born in Newcastle (now Toodyay), Western Australia, on 11 November 1865, Michael O'Connor was the son of Daniel Connor, a former convict who had become one of the wealthiest men in the colony. His use of a different surname vis-à-vis that of his father is believed to be an attempt to obscure his convict origins, which was at that time a substantial social stigma. As a youth O'Connor was a prominent cricket and polo player, and was captain of the Perth Polo Club. He was educated privately in Western Australia, then sent for further education in Ireland, where he attended Clongowes Wood College of Jesuits in County Kildare, and Trinity College in Dublin. The Emu Brewery was a brewery in Perth, Western Australia, which traced its history to the first decade of the Swan River Colony, colony. Founded in 1837 by James Stokes as the Albion Brewery, it was located beside the Swan River, Western Australia, Swan River on a block bounded by Mounts Bay Road, Spring Street and Mount Street. The business changed hands — and names — several times, until its ultimate acquisition by competitor the Swan Brewery in 1927. New brewery buildings were constructed over the years. Timothy Quinlan
Timothy Francis Quinlan KSS (18 February 1861 – 8 July 1927) was an Irish-born Australian politician who represented the electorates of West Perth and Toodyay in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between 1890 and 1894, and 1897 and 1911, respectively. Quinlan was also Speaker of the Assembly for a period of time between 1905 and 1911. Born in Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Ireland on 18 February 1861, Timothy Quinlan emigrated to Western Australia with his parents in 1863. Orphaned in 1865, he was raised by Joseph Thomas Reilly, and educated at the Cathedral Boys School in Perth. He worked for John Monger at York from 1875, and then for Alexander McRae at Roebourne. He was also involved in the pearling industry for about two years. In 1882, Quinlan leased the Shamrock Hotel in Perth from Daniel Connor, an expiree convict who had become one of the wealthiest men in the colony. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) is a 450-bed adult and teaching hospital located on the northeastern edge of the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. Smallpox
Smallpox was an infectious disease caused by variola virus (often called smallpox virus) which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus. The last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977, and the World Health Organization (WHO) certified the global eradication of the disease in 1980, making it the only human disease to be eradicated. The initial symptoms of the disease included fever and vomiting. This was followed by formation of ulcers in the mouth and a skin rash. Over a number of days, the skin rash turned into the characteristic fluid-filled blisters with a dent in the center. The bumps then scabbed over and fell off, leaving scars. The disease was spread between people or via contaminated objects. Prevention was achieved mainly through the smallpox vaccine. Once the disease had developed, certain antiviral medication may have helped. The risk of death was about 30%, with higher rates among babies.
