Michael McGrath (American Politician)
Michael Alan McGrath (October 27, 1942 – January 27, 2021) was an American politician and businessman. He was the first openly gay Minnesota state officer. McGrath was born in Trenton, New Jersey. He graduated from high school in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, in 1961. He served in the United States Air Force before marrying Marsha Palmer of New Smyrna Beach, attending Daytona Beach Community College, and graduating from Stetson University in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies. McGrath was employed by International Dairy Queen, Inc., in Bloomington, Minnesota, from 1972 to 1984, ending as a vice president. Stetson University is a private university with four colleges and schools located across the I–4 corridor in Central Florida with the primary undergraduate campus in DeLand. The university was founded in 1883 and was later established in 1887. In total, there are over 4,000 students currently enrolled at Stetson. History Stetson University was founded in 1883 and was first known as DeLand Academy, after the principal founder of the town, Henry Addison DeLand. In 1889, the name was changed to John B. Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party
The Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) is the Minnesota affiliate of the U.S. Democratic Party. As of 2022, it controls four of Minnesota's eight U.S. House seats, both of its U.S. Senate seats, the Minnesota House of Representatives, and all other statewide offices, including the governorship. Beginning in 2023, the party will also control the Minnesota Senate, giving it full control of state government. The state treasurer of Minnesota was a constitutional officer in the executive branch of the U.S. state of Minnesota. Twenty-six individuals occupied the office of state treasurer from 1858 until the office's abolition in 2003. The final state treasurer was Carol C. Johnson, a DFLer. Election and term of office The state treasurer was elected by the people on Election Day in November, and took office on the first Monday of the next January. There was no limit to the number of terms a state treasurer may hold. To be elected state treasurer, a person must have been a qualified voter, permanently resident in the state of Minnesota at least 30 days prior to the election, and at least 21 years of age.
