Michael Heffernan (politician)
Michael Richard Heffernan (3 April 1885 – 21 November 1970) was an Irish politician, sportsperson and soldier. Early life While working as a bank clerk in Skibbereen, County Cork, Heffernan played rugby for Cork Constitution in the 1900s and by 1911 had risen to the level of playing for the Ireland national rugby union team, earning 4 caps including one against England and one against France. He had also played for Munster Rugby. In 1911 Heffernan emigrated to Canada, continuing his career as a bank clerk there. In 1914 he enlisted with the Canadian Army and fought in World War I. Following the war he returned to Ireland and began farming on the family holding at Kilmurray Lodge, Ballyneally, near Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary in 1920. Political career Heffernan was county secretary of the South Tipperary Farmers Association. Michael Heffernan (hurler)
Michael Heffernan is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Nenagh Éire Óg and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team. Career Heffernan won two All-Ireland Minor Hurling medals in 2006 and 2007. He made his National Hurling League debut as a substitute against Limerick in 2010, scoring a point from play. He went on to make his Championship debut on 3 July 2010 against Wexford in the 2010 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Qualifiers. On 28 July 2010, Heffernan played at corner forward, scoring 1-3 for Tipperary as they defeated Clare in the 2010 Munster Under-21 Hurling final at Semple Stadium, winning by 1–22 to 1–17. On 5 September 2010, Heffernan was a non-playing substitute as Tipperary won their 26th All Ireland title, beating reigning champions Killkenny by 4–17 to 1–18 in the final, preventing Kilkenny from achieving an historic 5-in-a-row, it was Heffernan's first All-Ireland winners medal. Michael Heffernan (academic)
Michael John Heffernan is a Historical geography, historical geographer and academic. Since 1999, he has been Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Nottingham. Career Michael Heffernan was awarded a doctorate, PhD at St John's College, Cambridge in 1987 for his thesis on ''The Politics of Literacy: Cultural Change and Political Responses in Nineteenth-Century Provincial France''. Heffernan joined Loughborough University as a lecturer in 1985, and was promoted to senior lecturer five years later, then to a Reader (academic rank), readership in 1995. In 1999, he was appointed Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Nottingham. According to his British Academy profile, Heffernan's research focuses on "the history of geography and cartography" and "the historical geography of France and the French Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries".
