Michael Griffith (novelist)
Michael Griffith is an American novelist and short story writer. His stories and essays have appeared in literary journals such as '' The Oxford American'', '' The Southwest Review'', '' Salmagundi'', and '' The Virginia Quarterly Review'', among others. Griffith received a Master of Fine Arts from LSU in Baton Rouge, and is the former associate editor of '' The Southern Review''. He now works as a professor of creative fiction writing at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio and teaches fiction writing at the Sewanee School of Letters at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Howard Beach Racial Incident
Michael Griffith (March 2, 1963 – December 20, 1986) was a 23-year-old black man who was killed on December 20, 1986, in Howard Beach, in Queens, New York City, in a racially motivated attack. Griffith and two other black men were set upon by a group of white youths outside a pizza parlor. Two of the victims, including Griffith, were severely beaten. Griffith fled onto a highway where he was fatally struck by a passing car. Three local teenagers, Jon Lester, Scott Kern, and Jason Ladone, were convicted of manslaughter for the death of Griffith. A fourth assailant, Michael Pirone, was acquitted. Griffith's death heightened racial tensions in New York City and was the second of three highly publicized, racially motivated killings of black men by white mobs in New York City in the 1980s. Mike Griffith (cricketer)
Mike Grenville Griffith, (born 25 November 1943) is a former English first-class cricketer, who played for and captained Sussex County Cricket Club. A middle-order right-handed batsman, he also kept wicket occasionally. Griffith was born at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, the son of the Sussex and England wicket-keeper and cricket administrator Billy Griffith. He was educated at Ludgrove School followed by Marlborough College and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He played first for Sussex in 1962, then for Cambridge University for three years from 1963, winning his blue all three years. In 1968 he succeeded Jim Parks as county captain during the season, and continued as captain until 1972. He stood down from the captaincy after 1972. Griffith took part in several lesser cricket tours, none of them including representative cricket. He also played frequently for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) sides. Mike Griffith is a Republican member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing District 35B since January 7, 2020. Griffith was appointed by Maryland governor Larry Hogan after Andrew Cassilly resigned the seat to become a senior advisor to Hogan. Early life and career Griffith was born in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland. In 1995, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving as a military police officer, supervisor, and liaison until 2002. Upon his return to the United States, Griffith served on various community boards, including the Maryland Building Industry Association, the Harford County Economic Development Advisory Board, and the Arc Northern Chesapeake Region. Griffith entered into politics in 2018 by becoming a member of the Harford County Republican Central Committee. Griffith was elected the chair of the committee in 2019.
