MetService was established as a state-owned enterprise in 1992. It employs about 300 staff, and its headquarters are in Wellington, New Zealand. Prior to becoming an SOE, New Zealand's national meteorological service has existed in a number of forms since the appointment of the country's first Director of Meteorological Stations in August 1861. As New Zealand's national meteorological service, MetService produces and issues forecasts and official weather warnings on behalf of New Zealand's Ministry of Transport and is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand. Edward Kidson
Edward Kidson (12 March 1882 – 12 June 1939) was a New Zealand meteorologist and scientific administrator. Early life and education Kidson was born in Bilston, Staffordshire, England, on 12 March 1882. his family moved to Nelson, New Zealand when he was aged three. Kidson was educated at Nelson College from 1896 to 1900, and at Canterbury College, from where he graduated MSc with first-class honours in electricity and magnetism in 1905, and MA in 1906. Military service Kidson served in the meteorological section of the Royal Engineers from 1915 to 1919. He studied the application of wind and temperature measurements to gunnery as well as developing a forecasting service for artillery for the expeditionary force in Salonika. This proved successful and saw Kidson promoted to the rank of captain in 1917 and as well as being mentioned in dispatches. State-owned Enterprises Of New Zealand
State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in New Zealand are registered companies listed under Schedules 1 and 2 of the ''State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986''. Most SOEs are former government departments or agencies that were corporatised. They are responsible to the Minister of State Owned Enterprises. Many other government-owned companies and statutory trading organisations are referred to informally as "state-owned enterprises" although they are not SOEs in the strictest sense. These are also listed here. Function The function of SOEs is to operate successfully as a business, as profitable as those not owned by the Crown. The Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport is the public service department of New Zealand charged with advising the government on transport policy. History The Ministry was established in 1968 with a merger of the then Transport Department and the Civil Aviation Department. Numerical weather prediction (NWP) uses mathematical models of the atmosphere and oceans to predict the weather based on current weather conditions. Though first attempted in the 1920s, it was not until the advent of computer simulation in the 1950s that numerical weather predictions produced realistic results. Combined Cycle
A combined cycle power plant is an assembly of heat engines that work in tandem from the same source of heat, converting it into mechanical energy. On land, when used to make electricity the most common type is called a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant. The same principle is also used for marine propulsion, where it is called a combined gas and steam (COGAS) plant. Combining two or more thermodynamic cycles improves overall efficiency, which reduces fuel costs. The principle is that after completing its cycle in the first engine, the working fluid (the exhaust) is still hot enough that a second subsequent heat engine can extract energy from the heat in the exhaust. Usually the heat passes through a heat exchanger so that the two engines can use different working fluids. A Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) is a group of experts responsible for coordinating and disseminating information on atmospheric volcanic ash clouds that may endanger aviation. As at 2019, there are nine Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers located around the world, each one focusing on a particular geographical region.
