Metameur is a Berber village with around 1500 inhabitants in the south of Tunisia located near Medenine. Metameur lies in a slightly elevated area about 100 m above sea level. d. M. about 7 km (route) northwest of Medenine. Metameur was founded around the 14th century. Governorates Of Tunisia
Tunisia is divided into 24 governorate, governorates (''wilayat'', sing. ''wilayah''). This term in Arabic can also be translated as province or federated state (though the latter does not apply, as Tunisia is a unitary state). The governorates are divided into 264 Delegations of Tunisia, delegations (''mutamadiyat''), and further subdivided into municipality, municipalities (''baladiyat''), and sectors (''imadats''). Tunisia is divided into 6 regions. It is mostly temperate near the capital Tunis, but becomes more arid in the southern regions due to the Saharan Desert. Medenine Governorate
Medenine ( ') is one of the 24 governorates (provinces) of Tunisia. Geography The governorate encompasses the south-easternmost coastal strip, totalling 9167 km2 and had a population of 479,520 at the 2014 census. The capital is Medenine. The governorate includes the country's largest island, Djerba, which is connected by a ferry boat and has over a third of the total population of the governate and its own airport. The area is generally lowlands. It extends in two projections at its extreme ends a maximum of 60 km from the coast, otherwise the neighbouring division of Tataouine is 30 km from the coast. The northern projection abuts Kebili Governorate and includes part of a long escarpment which extends from the south of Gabes Governorate (adjoining Medenine to the north) to beyond Tripoli in Libya and which is dotted with settlements. Medenine
Medenine ( ar, مدنين ) is the major town in south-eastern Tunisia, south of the port of Gabès and the Island of Djerba, on the main route to Libya. It is the capital of Medenine Governorate. Overview In pre-colonial times, Medenine was already the most important trading centre in the south, attracting merchants from all over North Africa and even from Bornu, to the south of the Sahara. The Ksar housed the central granaries of the various nomadic Berber tribes of the region. The area was the scene of an unsuccessful German counter-attack by General Erwin Rommel as part of Operation Capri during March 1943 against British Eighth Army forces.
