Merit (indie Rock Band)
Merit is an American indie rock band from Syracuse, New York, United States. Band history In 2002, Wil Mecum and Jeff Nelson (attending Syracuse University at the time) joined forces with local singer songwriter Brenna Merritt, and took a variant spelling of her last name for their new band's name. Hal Appleby rounded out the group. Remaining in Syracuse after graduation, the band plays there regularly, also trekking to New York City to play. Occasional tours have taken the band as far away as Georgia. They've opened for several national acts including Thousand Foot Krutch, Liz Phair, Stage, Bif Naked, The Reputation, and Freya. Their first demo, recorded in May 2003 found its way to a Syracuse rock station, where it not only received airplay, but also won them an hour-long interview and acoustic performance. Liz Phair
Elizabeth Clark Phair (born April 17, 1967) is an American singer-songwriter. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Phair was raised primarily in the Chicago area. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1990, she attempted to start a musical career in San Francisco, California, but returned to her home in Chicago, where she began self-releasing audio cassettes under the name Girly Sound, Girly-Sound. The tapes led to a recording contract with the independent record label Matador Records. The Reputation was an indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The band was fronted by former Sarge singer-songwriter Elizabeth Elmore, with other positions filled by various members. The band, which formed while Elmore was attending law school, released two albums between the years of 2001 and 2006, both of which were met with generally positive reviews. The band toured extensively in the United States and Canada, as well as in the United Kingdom. Beth Torbert is a Canadian singer best known by her stage name Bif Naked. Between 1996 and 2016, she was among the top 150 selling Canadian artists in Canada. Early life and education Bif Naked was born in New Delhi, India, to teenage parents attending private school. She was subsequently adopted by American missionaries. She spent part of her childhood in Lexington, Kentucky, where her father was a professor at the University of Kentucky.
