Menéndez Pelayo International Prize
The Menéndez Pelayo International Prize has been awarded since 1987 by the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) with the objective of honoring those persons whose literary or scientific work has a humanistic orientation and application, in the tradition of the University's namesake Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo. It was established with the generous support of Eulalio Ferrer, a Spanish-Mexican entrepreneur and academician. Citizens of any Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking country are eligible. Nominations for the prize are made by universities and academies, as well as other organizations involved in the literary, humanistic or scientific cultures of those countries. Menéndez Pelayo International University
Menéndez Pelayo International University ("UIMP" in Spanish) is a public university with administrative headquarters in Madrid and campuses in Santander, Valencia, Barcelona, Cartagena, Cuenca, Granada, La Línea de la Concepción, Seville and Tenerife. The University also conducts classes at the Luis Seoane Foundation in A Coruña and the Huesca campus of the University of Zaragoza. Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, 1st Marquess of Vargas Llosa (born 28 March 1936), more commonly known as Mario Vargas Llosa (, ), is a Peruvian novelist, journalist, essayist and former politician, who also holds Spanish citizenship. Ernesto de la Peña (; 21 November 1927 – 10 September 2012) was a Mexican writer, translator and cultural advocate. Peña was also a linguist and polyglot who studied thirty-three languages, as varied as Latin language, Latin, Greek language, Greek, Hebrew language, Hebrew and Sanskrit language, Sanskrit. Margit Frenk Freund (in full, Margarita Ana María Frenk y Freund), sometimes known by her married name, Margit Frenk Alatorre (born 21 August 1925 in Hamburg), is a German-Mexican philologist, folklorist and translator. She has been an Academic Numerary of the Mexican Language Academy since 1993. She is also a Doctor Honoris Causa at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Victoria Camps (born 1941, Barcelona) is a Spanish philosopher and professor of ethics. Career She obtained a degree in philosophy at the University of Barcelona, completing her thesis, entitled “ La dimensión pragmática del lenguaje”, in 1975. Belisario Betancur Cuartas (4 February 1923 – 7 December 2018) was a Colombian politician who served as the 26th President of Colombia from 1982 to 1986. Eduardo García de Enterría y Martínez-Carande (27 April 1923 – 16 September 2013) was a Spanish jurist and a major contributor to the research and teaching of Public Law in Spain. Mario Orlando Hardy Hamlet Brenno Benedetti Farrugia (; 14 September 1920 – 17 May 2009), was an Uruguayan journalist, novelist, and poet and an integral member of the Generación del 45. Emilio Lledó Íñigo (Seville, 5 November 1927) is a Spanish philosopher. He has been a professor at several universities and is a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. Career He took his bachelor's degree at the Instituto de Bachillerato Cervantes and, in 1952, his degree in philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid. He went to Germany to continue his studies in classical philosophy with Hans-Georg Gadamer, who helped him to finish his doctoral thesis by securing him a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Nélida Piñon Nélida Piñon (3 May 1937 – 17 December 2022) was a Brazilian author and professor. At the time of her death, Piñon was "considered among the foremost writers in Brazil today".
