400 Metres
The 400 metres, or 400-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics (sport), athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track. Runners start in staggered positions and race in separate lanes for the entire course. In many countries, athletes previously competed in the 440-yard dash (402.336 m)—which is a quarter of a mile and was referred to as the 'quarter-mile'—instead of the 400 m (437.445 yards), though this distance is now obsolete. Like other sprint disciplines, the 400 m involves the use of starting blocks. Matthew Hudson-Smith (born 26 October 1994) is a British track and field sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. He holds, as of July 2022, the British record, running a personal best of 44.35 seconds for the distance set at Eugene, Oregon in the 2022 Diamond League meeting. He was the 2018 European Champion in 400 metres, and a member of the gold-winning teams in the 4 x 400 metre relay at the 2014 European Athletics Championships, with Great Britain and 2014 Commonwealth Games with England. In the summer of 2022 he won his first individual global medal, a bronze, in the 2022 World Championships, only the second British male after Roger Black to win a World Championships medal in the event. Thomas Schönlebe
Thomas Schönlebe (born 6 August 1965) is a retired East German track and field athlete who competed in the 400 metres. He won the gold medal at the 1987 World Championships. In that race, he set a European record of 44.33 seconds which still stands. A year earlier, Schönlebe had finished second at the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart behind Roger Black. One of his last achievements was the third place at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart with the (now unified) German 4 × 400 m relay team. Schönlebe achieved three world indoor records during his career : * 45.41 s in the 400 m on 9 February 1986; * 45.05 s in 400 m on 5 February 1988; * 3:03.05 in 4x400 m relay as a member of a German team on 10 March 1991. Erwin Skamrahl
Erwin Richard Skamrahl (born 8 March 1958) is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the 200 and 400 metres. Biography At the 1982 European Championships he finished fourth in the 200 metres, won a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 metres relay and a gold medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. Earlier that year he had won the 200 m at the 1982 European Indoor Championships in a new championship record of 21.20 seconds. At the 1983 World Championships he finished fourth in the 400 metres and won a silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. He then competed in the 1984 Olympic relay, finished eighth in 400 m at the 1986 European Championships and fifth in 200 m at the 1987 European Indoor Championships. His personal best time in 400 m was 44.50 seconds, achieved in July 1983 in Munich. This ranks him second among German 400 m sprinters, only behind Thomas Schönlebe who ran 44.33 seconds. Viktor Markin
Viktor Fyodorovich Markin () (born 23 February 1957 in the village of Oktyabrsky, Ust-Tarksky District, Novosibirsk Oblast ) is a former Soviet athlete, winner of two gold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics. After graduating from a secondary school he went to Novosibirsk, where he entered the Faculty of Pediatrics of the Institute of Medicine. Markin started athletics only at age 19 in the athletics section by the institute, coached by Aleksandr Bukhasheyev. He remained quite unknown until the Moscow Olympic Games. On 27 April 1980, in Sochi, Markin ran a new personal best in the one lap event of 46.96 seconds. In early July Markin ran 45.34 at the Central Lenin Stadium. In the Olympic final on July 30, Markin was only fifth at the halfway mark and as the final straight opened he was still three metres behind the leader Frank Schaffer of East Germany. Karl Honz (born 28 January 1951) is a retired German sprinter. He held the European record in the 400 metres from 1972 until 1980 with a time of 44.70 s. At the 1972 Summer Olympics he placed seventh in the 400 m and fourth in the 4 × 400 m relay. Honz was most successful in the European Indoor Championships in Athletics. In the 4 × 400 m relay, he won silver in 1973 in Rotterdam and gold in 1975 in Katowice. In 1974 in Rome, he won gold in the 400m with a time of 45.04 seconds, ahead of David Jenkins (GB) and Bernd Herrmann, and silver in the 4 × 400 m (with Köhler, Schlöske and Ziegler) with a time of 3:03.52 minutes, behind Great Britain and ahead of France.
