This is a list of members of the 31st Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1947 to 1950, as elected at the 1947 state election held on 3 May 1947. During the term, the Queensland People's Party became the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia. : On 14 May 1949, the Labor member for Ipswich, David Gledson, died. Labor candidate Ivor Marsden won the resulting by-election on 10 September 1949. : On 18 July 1949, the Labor member for Kurilpa, Kerry Copley, died. Labor candidate Tom Moores won the resulting by-election on 10 September 1949. : On 27 October 1949, Ted Maher, the Country member for West Moreton resigned to contest a seat in the Australian Senate at the 1949 federal election. The following day, Charles Russell, the member for Dalby, resigned to contest the seat of Maranoa. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Assembly first sat in May 1860 and produced Australia's first Hansard in April 1864. Samuel Brassington
Samuel John Brassington (6 May 1901 – 4 October 1950) was an Australian politician. Electoral District Of Fitzroy (Queensland)
Fitzroy was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district was based in central Queensland, west of Rockhampton. It included the towns of Baralaba, Blackwater, Duaringa, Dysart, Mount Morgan and Wowan as well as some of Rockhampton's outer suburbs. The electorate was first contested in 1992. An earlier district based in the same region was also called Fitzroy. It was first contested in 1888 and abolished in 1960. In 2008, Fitzroy was abolished—with effect at the 2009 state election—as a result of a redistribution undertaken by the Electoral Commission of Queensland. Its former territory and voters were divided between the districts of Callide, Gregory, Mirani and Rockhampton. Jim Burrows (Queensland Politician)
James Burrows (21 December 1886 - 17 August 1970) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Burrows was born at Eidsvold, Queensland, the son of Henry Burrows and his wife Laura Christine (née Brandis). He was educated at Gaeta, Mount Perry and Many Peaks state schools and then did an accountancy and Local Government Clerkship correspondence course with Hemingway Robertson Ltd. He did general bushwork before becoming and auditor and registered valuer. In October 1940 Burrows married Bertha Maud Wilkinson and together had four sons. He died at Gladstone in October 1978. Public life Burrows, representing the Labor Party, won the seat of Port Curtis at the 1947 Queensland state election. The Tableland was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History The Tableland was created in the 1931 redistribution, taking effect at the 1932 state election. It was based in the Atherton Tableland, west of Cairns. Harry Bruce (politician)
Henry Adam Bruce (16 May 1884 – 11 October 1958), known as Harry Bruce, was an Australian politician and former union organiser. First entering state politics in Queensland before later entering Parliament of the Commonwealth. Biography Born in Wandiligong, Victoria, he was educated at Haileybury College in Melbourne before moving to Queensland to become a bushworker in 1902. Later, he was a sugar grower and an organiser of the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). In 1923 Bruce was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the Labor member for the district of Kennedy. In 1932, he was elected as member for The Tableland. In that year he was appointed Secretary of Public Works; in 1938 he was also made Secretary of Public Instruction, a position he held until 1941. In 1947 he was transferred from Public Works to Public Instruction. During this time, the Bruce Highway was named in his honour.
