Members Of The 21st Seanad
This is a list of the members of the 21st Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (legislature) of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Unless otherwise indicated, these Senate, Senators were elected or appointed in 1997, after the 1997 Irish general election, 1997 general election and served until the close of poll for the 22nd Seanad at the end of July 2002. Composition of the 21st Seanad There are a total of 60 seats in the Seanad. 43 Senators are elected by the Vocational panels, 6 are elected by the Universities and 11 are Nominated members of Seanad Éireann, nominated by the Taoiseach. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. It has been located, since its establishment, in Leinster House. Fine Gael
Fine Gael (, ; English: "Family (or Tribe) of the Irish") is a liberal-conservative and Christian-democratic political party in Ireland. Fine Gael is currently the third-largest party in the Republic of Ireland in terms of members of Dáil Éireann and largest in terms of Irish members of the European Parliament. The party has a membership of 25,000 in 2021. Leo Varadkar succeeded Enda Kenny as party leader on 2 June 2017 and as Taoiseach on 14 June; Kenny had been leader since 2002, and Taoiseach since 2011. Fine Gael was founded on 8 September 1933 following the merger of its parent party Cumann na nGaedheal, the National Centre Party and the Army Comrades Association. Seán Ó Fearghaíl
Seán Ó Fearghaíl (; born 17 April 1960) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has served as the Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann since March 2016. He has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Kildare South constituency since 2002. He was a Senator for the Agricultural Panel from 2000 to 2002. Life and career Ó Fearghaíl comes from a farming background, and previously worked for Dublin Corporation. He was elected as a member of Kildare County Council in 1985. He first stood for election to Dáil Éireann in the Kildare constituency at the 1987 general election, but was unsuccessful. He was unsuccessful again at the 1989 general election. After further defeats at the 1992 and 1997 general elections, he stood for Seanad Éireann in 1997, as a candidate before the Agricultural Panel, but he was again unsuccessful in seeking election. Jim Glennon
James Glennon (born 7 July 1953) is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician and former Irish International rugby player. He was a Teachta Dála for the Dublin North constituency from 2002 to 2007. Glennon was born in Skerries, County Dublin in 1953. He was educated at Mount St. Joseph's school in Roscrea, County Tipperary. A former rugby union international he was capped six times for Ireland as a second row forward. He is a former coach and manager to the Leinster senior team and is also a former manager to the Ireland under 19 and Ireland under 21 teams. His uncle Gerrard McGowan was a Labour Party TD in the 1930s. Glennon first held political office when he was elected to Seanad Éireann in a by-election. He remained there until 2002 when he was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 2002 general election. Pat Gallagher (Labour Politician)
Pat Gallagher (born 29 March 1963) is the Chief executive of Westmeath and a former Labour Party politician. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for Laois–Offaly from 1992 to 1997. Previously a workshop manager, Gallagher was elected to Dáil Éireann for the Laois–Offaly constituency during the swing to Labour at the 1992 general election. Like many Labour TDs elected in 1992, he lost his seat at the 1997 general election. His seat was taken by Tom Enright of Fine Gael. Gallagher was then elected to the 21st Seanad, on the Industrial and Commercial Panel, and served as Whip of the Labour senators from 13 August 1997 to 12 October 1999. He resigned from the Seanad in October 1999. He had previously unsuccessfully contested the 1989 general election. Patrick McGowan (Irish Politician)
Patrick McGowan (16 July 1926 – 3 October 1999) was a Fianna Fáil politician in Ireland. A farmer and potato merchant, he was an elected to Seanad Éireann from 1965 to 1981, and from 1987 to 1999. He was elected on the Agricultural Panel and served for 28 years making him one of Ireland's longest serving Seanad Éireann members. In 1970 he agreed to pay £3,900 including costs to a Donegal Businessman, Daniel Brolly, in a High Court case after he was accused of Adultery. Brendan Ryan (born 6 August 1946) is an Irish politician and former member of Seanad Éireann for the National University constituency. He was an Independent senator until 1999, when he joined the Labour Party. Career Born in Athy, County Kildare, Ryan's political interest arises from his involvement in the 1970s and 1980s with the Simon Community, an organisation which works with and for homeless people. John Cregan (politician)
John Cregan (born 21 May 1961) is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) and Senator from 1998 to 2011. He is from Dromcolliher, County Limerick. On 23 June 1998, Cregan was elected to the 21st Seanad Éireann on the Labour Panel, at a by-election to fill the seat vacated by the Labour Party senator Seán Ryan, who had been elected to Dáil Éireann at a by-election. Seán Ryan (Irish Politician)
Seán Ryan (born 27 January 1943) is an Irish former Labour Party (Ireland), Labour Party politician. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for Dublin North (Dáil constituency), Dublin North from 1989 to 1997 and 1998 to 2007. Ryan was born in Dublin and educated at North Strand Vocational School, the Dublin Institute of Technology, College of Technology, Bolton Street, the National College of Ireland, College of Industrial Relations, and the School of Management, Rathmines College of Commerce. Ryan was formerly Production Controller and Work Study Supervisor with CIÉ and Iarnród Éireann before entering into full-time politics. In 1985 he was elected to Fingal County Council. 1998 Dublin North By-election
A by-election was held in the Dáil Éireann Dublin North constituency in Ireland on 11 March 1998. It followed the resignation of Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) Ray Burke on 7 October 1997. The election was won by Seán Ryan of the Labour Party. The election was notable in that it had the highest number of candidates to every contest a Dáil by-election. 19 candidates contested, including 9 Independents. The election took 14 counts to declare a winner with 8 candidates getting less than 1% of the first preference vote. 2001 Tipperary South By-election
A by-election was held in the Dáil Éireann Tipperary South constituency in Ireland on 30 June 2001. It followed the death of Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) Theresa Ahearn on 20 September 2000. The election was won by Fine Gael Senator Tom Hayes. The other candidates being Phil Prendergast standing as an Independent, Michael Maguire for Fianna Fáil and Denis Landy for the Labour Party. Prendergast, Maguire and Landy were all members of South Tipperary County Council at the time. This was the second by-election in Tipperary South during the 28th Dáil. The 2002 Irish general election to the 29th Dáil was held on Friday, 17 May, just over three weeks after the dissolution of the 28th Dáil on Thursday, 25 April by President Mary McAleese, at the request of the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern.
