This is a list of members of the 34th Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 19 May 1956 to 3 August 1957, as elected at the 1956 state election held on 19 May 1956. The term was cut short by a split within the governing Labor Party—the Premier, Vince Gair, and all but one of his ministers were expelled from the Party on 24 April 1957. He and 25 members of Parliament formed the Queensland Labor Party on 26 April, whilst the remaining Labor members became the main Opposition party and elected Jack Duggan as leader. Gair continued as Premier but could not obtain supply from the Parliament, so an election was called. : On 29 July 1956, the Labor member for Ithaca, Leonard Eastment, died. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The National Party of Australia – Queensland (NPA-Q), commonly known as Queensland Nationals, or the National Party of Queensland, was the Queensland-state branch of the National Party of Australia (NPA) until 2008. Prior to 1974, it was known as the Country Party. Formed in 1915 by the Queensland Farmers' Union (QFU) and serving as the state branch of the National Party of Australia, it initially sought to represent the interests of the farmers but over time became a more general conservative political party in the state, leading to much debate about relations with other conservative parties and a string of mergers that were soon undone. Jim Clark (Australian Politician)
James Clark (5 February 1891 – 22 November 1963) was a miner and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Clark was born in Gympie, Queensland, to parents James Clark and his wife Marion Cathie Clark (née White). He worked as a miner and in 1926 he became an organiser with the Australian Workers' Union. Electoral District Of Lockyer
Lockyer is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district consists primarily of Gatton and Laidley Shires and northern parts of Beaudesert Shire. It includes the major town of Gatton and a number of smaller centres including Laidley, Helidon and Withcott. The eastern parts of the district are part of the outer southern suburbs of Ipswich and Brisbane in the area of Greenmount. The district is bounded on the west by Toowoomba North, and Toowoomba South. On the southwest and south by Condamine, Southern Downs and Beaudesert. To the north and northwest by Nanango. Liberal Party Of Australia (Queensland Division)
The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. However, in the "state sphere", it would continue to exist individually under its own banner. In July 1949, the QPP was renamed to reflect its status as the Queensland division of the Liberal Party. Electoral District Of Mourilyan
Mourilyan was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1950 to 1992. First created for the 1950 state election, the district was based in north Queensland, centred on the town of Mourilyan, taking in areas previously belonging to the abolished district of Herbert. Mourilyan was abolished by the 1991 redistribution, necessitated by the one vote one value reforms, taking effect at the 1992 state election. Its territory was divided between the neighbouring districts of Hinchinbrook and Tablelands. Peter Byrne (politician)
Peter Byrne (13 June 1892 – 16 March 1974) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Byrne was born at Myola, Queensland, the son of Peter Byrne Snr and his wife Mary (née McCoy). He was educated at the Mareeba State School and then attended Nudgee College in Brisbane. On leaving school he found work at the Chillagoe smelters before becoming a canegrower in Tully from 1925. Jim Burrows (Queensland Politician)
James Burrows (21 December 1886 - 17 August 1970) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Burrows was born at Eidsvold, Queensland, the son of Henry Burrows and his wife Laura Christine (née Brandis). He was educated at Gaeta, Mount Perry and Many Peaks state schools and then did an accountancy and Local Government Clerkship correspondence course with Hemingway Robertson Ltd. He did general bushwork before becoming and auditor and registered valuer. In October 1940 Burrows married Bertha Maud Wilkinson and together had four sons. He died at Gladstone in October 1978. Public life Burrows, representing the Labor Party, won the seat of Port Curtis at the 1947 Queensland state election. Buranda was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History Buranda was created by the 1910 Electoral Districts Act, taking effect at the 1912 elections. It consisted broadly of the south-west corner of the former Electoral district of Bulimba. It was located south-east of Brisbane. It was abolished in the 1959 redistribution (taking effect at the 1960 elections), being incorporated into the newly created Electoral district of Greenslopes. Richard Kidston Brown (1887 – 22 January 1971) was a Blacksmith and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Brown was born at Dumbarton, Scotland, to John Brown, and his wife Janet (née Kidston). Arriving with his family in 1889, he attended South Brisbane State School before commencing work in the family business as a blacksmith at Coorparoo. In 1922 he gained employment as an insurance inspector. As a youth, Brown joined the Thompson Estate Harriers Athletic Club, an association that was to last 71 years including 33 years as its president.
