Melmerby Railway Station
Melmerby railway station was a railway station and junction in North Yorkshire, England. It had one main line going south to Ripon and Harrogate and one main line north to Northallerton with one lesser line going east to Thirsk Town and also connecting with the East Coast Main Line at Thirsk railway station. Its one other line was a branch to Masham. History The station was opened to traffic in June 1848 when the line to Ripon opened up southwards from Thirsk Town. At the opening of the station it was known as Wath, but this was changed in February 1852 to Melmerby. The station lay equidistant between the two villages from where it was named after. Last to open was the branch to Masham which was formally inaugurated on the 9 June 1875. The Masham Branch shared platforms with the Northallerton line and there was one large 'V' shaped island platform between the Northallerton and Thirsk lines. Melmerby, Harrogate
Melmerby is a village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England, that lies north of Ripon and west of the A1(M) motorway. The population was 386 in the 2011 census. Etymology The name is of Old Norse origin and means a sandy settlement (''malmr'' "sandy field" and ''bý'' "farmstead or village"). The form of the name has been influenced by Melmerby in Coverdale, west, which has a different origin. Many of the fields in the area have Norse names too, e.g. Halikeld, where 'keld' is an Old Norse word for 'spring'. History Melmerby was mentioned in the Domesday Book. It was historically a manor and chapelry in the parish of Wath in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. Northallerton ( ) is a market town and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It lies in the Vale of Mowbray and at the northern end of the Vale of York. It had a population of 16,832 in the 2011 census, an increase from 15,741 in 2001. It has served as the county town of the North Riding of Yorkshire and, since 1974, of North Yorkshire. Tanfield Railway Station
Tanfield railway station was a railway station serving the community of West Tanfield on the Masham Line in North Yorkshire, England. The station was opened with the line in June 1875 and was closed to passengers in January 1931. Full closure of the line was effected in 1963. History The station opened in June 1875 as the only intermediate one between the town of Masham and the junction of the line with the Leeds Northern Railway at . Passenger trains continued on southwards from Melmerby to terminate at railway station. In May 1891, six trains a day were scheduled to call at Tanfield, which had been reduced to four each way by 1902. The journey to Masham took six minutes, with that to Ripon taking seventeen. Leeds & Thirsk Railway
The Leeds Northern Railway (LNR), originally the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, was an English railway company that built and opened a line from Leeds to Stockton via Harrogate and Thirsk. In 1845 the Leeds and Thirsk Railway received permission for a line from Leeds to Thirsk, part of which opened in 1848, but problems building the Bramhope Tunnel delayed trains operating into Leeds until 1849. The Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company changed its name to the Leeds Northern Railway on 3 July 1851 before its line to Stockton opened. The company formed an alliance with the West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway and was involved in a price war with the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway (YN&BR). Sinderby Railway Station
Sinderby railway station served the village of Sinderby, North Yorkshire, England from 1852 to 1963 on the Leeds-Northallerton Railway. History The station opened on 2 June 1852 by the Leeds Northern Railway. The station was situated on the east side of the A1. Like Newby Wiske and Pickhill, the station opened with one platform although it was rebuilt and lengthened while another was built when the line was doubled in 1901. The goods yard was located behind the station buildings with a single set of coal drops. A loading dock was provided on the up side where there was also a cattle dock. The main freight that was handled at the station was barley, with 797 tons being handled in 1911. In 1913, 218 tons of livestock were handled at the station. By 1956 there was only one southbound train at 7:24am. The station was closed to passengers on 1 January 1962 and to goods traffic on 11 November 1963. Thirsk Rail Crash (1967)
The Thirsk rail crash occurred on 31 July 1967 at Thirsk, Yorkshire, England on the British Rail East Coast Main Line. Events The 12:00 1A26 express train from King's Cross to Edinburgh and Aberdeen collided at speed with the wreckage of a derailed freight train around 15:17 on that day. Seven people were killed and 45 injured, 15 seriously. Following the accident, three of the four lines (the Up outhboundand Down orthboundFast lines and the Down Slow line) were blocked by the wreckage of the collision. The Up Slow line was not damaged and was used by special trains to take the dead and injured to Newcastle upon Tyne. The Beeching cuts (also Beeching Axe) was a plan to increase the efficiency of the nationalised railway system in Great Britain. The plan was outlined in two reports: ''The Reshaping of British Railways'' (1963) and ''The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes'' (1965), written by Richard Beeching and published by the British Railways Board.
