Mellony Wijesinghe
Mellony Wijesinghe ( si, මෙලනී විජේසිංහ) (2002 – 20 October 2019) was a Sri Lankan netball player who played in the position of goal shooter in international netball tournaments. She died on 20 October 2019 from suspected leukaemia. She was treated by Dr Eliyantha White in July 2019 for a shoulder injury after which she developed loss of red blood cells, however tests conducted in India and South Africa have not revealed any trace of leukaemia. She also served as vice captain of the national youth netball team until her death. Education She initially pursued her primary education in Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda and received a scholarship to join Visakha Vidyalaya. Maharagama
Maharagama is an outer suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka on the High-Level (A4) Road about from the centre of the commercial capital. It developed rapidly in the 1980s as a dormitory suburb. Leukaemia
Leukemia ( also spelled leukaemia and pronounced ) is a group of blood cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal blood cells. These blood cells are not fully developed and are called ''blasts'' or ''leukemia cells''. Symptoms may include bleeding and bruising, bone pain, fatigue, fever, and an increased risk of infections. These symptoms occur due to a lack of normal blood cells. Diagnosis is typically made by blood tests or bone marrow biopsy. The exact cause of leukemia is unknown. A combination of genetic factors and environmental (non-inherited) factors are believed to play a role. Risk factors include smoking, ionizing radiation, petrochemicals (such as benzene), prior chemotherapy, and Down syndrome. People with a family history of leukemia are also at higher risk. Kiribathgoda ( si, කිරිබත්ගොඩ, ta, கிரிபத்கொடை) is a large suburb of Colombo and is situated on A1 highway, between Kelaniya and Kadawatha. It is the first commercial E-Suburb in Sri Lanka. The suburb is located 12 km away from Colombo Fort centre. It is also linked to Makola by road. Visakha Vidyalaya
Visakha Vidyalaya () is a girls' school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is a National School managed by the central government providing primary and secondary education. History The school was established in 1917 by Celestina Dias as the Buddhist Girls College in a house called 'The Firs' in Turret Road, Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was the desire of Dias to train the school girls according to the Buddhist moral values and principles. The Netball World Youth Cup Gaborone 2017 was the eighth staging of the tournament previously (until 2013) known as the World Youth Netball Championships, the premier competition in international netball, contested every four years. The 2017 tournament, to be held from 8–16 July, held in Gaborone, Botswana, which is first African region country to host the tournament. Tharjini Sivalingam (born 30 December 1978) is a former Sri Lankan veteran netball player and former skipper of the Sri Lankan national netball team. With her staggering height of 206 cm or a fraction under 6 ft 9in, she has been recognized as one of the most successful shooters of all time and often regarded as the tallest netball player ever. She is the most capped international netball player to represent Sri Lanka. She was a regular member of Sri Lankan netball team in international netball tournaments since making her debut in 2009. Acute Myeloid Leukaemia
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal cells that build up in the bone marrow and blood and interfere with normal blood cell production. Symptoms may include feeling tired, shortness of breath, easy bruising and bleeding, and increased risk of infection. Occasionally, spread may occur to the brain, skin, or gums. As an acute leukemia, AML progresses rapidly, and is typically fatal within weeks or months if left untreated. Risk factors include smoking, previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy, myelodysplastic syndrome, and exposure to the chemical benzene. The underlying mechanism involves replacement of normal bone marrow with leukemia cells, which results in a drop in red blood cells, platelets, and normal white blood cells. Eliyantha White
Eliyantha Lindsay White (1971 – 22 September 2021) was a Sri Lankan shaman who used traditional herbs. He treated several world leaders and many cricket players. Despite claiming to have developed a cure for COVID-19, White died of the virus on 22 September 2021, at a private hospital in Colombo.
