Melito Of Sardis
Melito of Sardis ( el, Μελίτων Σάρδεων ''Melítōn Sárdeōn''; died ) was the bishop of Sardis near Smyrna in western Anatolia, and a great authority in early Christianity. Melito held a foremost place in terms of bishops in Asia due to his personal influence and his literary works, most of which have been lost. What has been recovered, however, has provided a great insight into Christianity during the second century. Jerome, speaking of the Old Testament canon established by Melito, quotes Tertullian to the effect that he was esteemed as a prophet by many of the faithful. This work by Tertullian has been lost but Jerome quotes pieces regarding Melito for the high regard in which he was held at that time. Melito is remembered for his work on developing the first Old Testament Canon. Melito Irpino (Irpino: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Avellino, in the Campania region of south-western Italy. History The remains of the ancient Melito were found in 1880. According to some theories, it could be a suburban village belonging to Aeclanum, but the prevailing theory suggests that it was the ancient village of ''Melae'' (or ''Melas''). Prignano Cilento is a town and '' comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. As of 2017 its population was of 1,035. It is part of the municipal unit Meliti. Name The name of the village is "Voshterani", "Voštarani" (''Воштарани'', ''Вощарани'') or "Ovčarani" (''Овчарани'') in both Macedonian and Bulgarian. The village was called ''Türbeli'' during the Ottoman Empire. In 1926, it was renamed to "Meliti" in Greek.
