Melissa Price (pole Vaulter)
Melissa Price (born 20 September 1977) is a retired pole vaulter from the United States. She competed at the 1997 World Indoor Championships and the 1999 World Championships. Her personal best jump was metres, achieved in May 1998 in Houston. In 1995, while at Kingsburg High School in Kingsburg, California, Price set the first NFHS national high school record in the pole vault at 12' 6". National High School Record Book Women were so new to pole vaulting that Price won the 1994 and 1995 National Championships while still in high school. Her 1995 victory set a new American record at , beating another upstart pole vaulter from Idaho State University, Stacy Dragila. Price, then competing for Fresno State University finished second to Dragila the next two years and finished third in 1999. Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women. It is typically classified as one of the four major jumping events in athletics, alongside the high jump, long jump and triple jump. It is unusual among track and field sports in that it requires a significant amount of specialised equipment in order to participate, even at a basic level. Stacy Dragila
Stacy Renée Dragila (née Mikaelson; born March 25, 1971) is an American former pole vaulter. She is an Olympic gold medalist and a multiple world champion. Early life Dragila was born and raised in Auburn, California, northeast of Sacramento. She also participated in gymnastics, but had to give it up due to childhood asthma. She attended Placer Union High School where she played volleyball and ran on the track team as a sprinter, hurdler, and jumper. Early on she got coaching from Yuba Community College's John Orognen. She competed in the 300 meters hurdles at the CIF California State Meet, but didn't place. In 1990, she placed second at the Golden West Invitational in the 400 meters hurdles. The official results of the Women's Pole Vault at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, held on Monday 25 September 2000. There were a total number of 30 participating athletes in this event, which made its Olympic debut. The qualifying round was held on Saturday 23 September 2000, with the qualifying height set at 4.35 metres. While the pole vault had been a standard Olympic event for a century, dating back to the first revival in 1896, this was the first time the event had been held for women. The favorite coming into the event was world champion and world record holder Stacy Dragila, but the home favorite was Soviet transplant Australian Tatiana Grigorieva.
