Melanie Townsend
Melanie Townsend (1968 - December 19, 2018, London, Ontario, Canada) was a Canadian curator and writer on contemporary art, Head of Exhibitions at Museum London, and President of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries. Biography Townsend was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario. She attended Kennedy Collegiate Secondary School and earned an Honours bachelor's degree from Western University in 1991. She received a master's degree in history from the University of Windsor in 1994. During her undergraduate studies, she worked as a collections assistant with Windsor's Community Museum, later working at the Art Gallery of Windsor as its Curatorial Assistant/Coordinator. From 1998 to 2004, Townsend worked as Curator of the Walter Phillips Gallery at The Banff Centre and helped establish the Banff International Curatorial Institute. London, Ontario
London (pronounced ) is a city in southwestern Ontario, Canada, along the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. The city had a population of 422,324 according to the 2021 Canadian census. London is at the confluence of the Thames River, approximately from both Toronto and Detroit; and about from Buffalo, New York. Reva Stone
Reva Stone (born 1944) is a Canadian artist known for her digital artworks. Stone's work explores how technology changes the relationship between humans and our surroundings, and how those relationships have the potential to shape our future. She fuses the concepts of performance art, made popular in the 1960s, with digital imaging and other modern forms of expression. As one of the first women to be involved in the new media arts in Canada, her large-scale projects influenced many artists she mentored. Early career Stone graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1985. In art school, she originally began as a painter, "but that didn't last long" (according to Stone). Colette Urban
Constance "Colette" Joyce Urban (January 29, 1952 – June 16, 2013) was a Canadian/American artist known for performance art, sculpture and installation. Her work questioned social conventions, gender roles, and the relationship between spectator and performer, as well as consumer culture and the everyday with a disarming and humorous tone. Urban was a tenured Professor of Visual Arts at University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, until 2006, when she relocated to the Bay of Islands, in Western Newfoundland and based herself in the communities oMeadowsand McIvers, Newfoundland, to develop Full Tilt Creative Centre, an artist residency, organic farm and exhibition venue. Kim Adams
Kim Adams (born 17 December 1951) is a Canadian sculptor who is known for his assemblages combining prefabricated elements, often parts of cars or other machine-made structures. His visual style is influenced by industrial design, architecture and automotive design. His large-scale sculptures incorporate the model railroading technique of kitbashing, and bright stock colours. They may be shown in a park or street as well as in a museum setting. Jamelie Hassan
Jamelie Hassan (born 1948) is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist, lecturer, writer and independent curator. Early life and education Hassan was born in London, Ontario, to a Lebanese immigrant family and grew up in an Arabic speaking household with ten siblings. Her maternal grandfather and her father travelled from mountain villages in Lebanon to North America in the early 1900s, fleeing Turkish military conscription and World War I. After completing her high school studies, Hassan travelled to Rome in 1967 and to Beirut in 1968, where she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome and then the Académie libanaise des beaux-arts, Beirut. Ron Benner
Ron Benner (born 1949) is an internationally recognized Canadian artist whose longstanding practice investigates the history and political economics of food cultures. He is also a gardener and writer who currently lives and works in London, Ontario. Early life and career Ron Benner studied agricultural engineering for one year at the University of Guelph (1969–70). Finding himself ethically opposed to bioengineering, he began to travel and research the politics of food, and work as an artist in London, Ontario. Wyn Geleynse (born 1947) is a pioneer film and video projection artist whose career spans a period of over 40 years. Career Wyn Geleynse was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and he and his parents emigrated from Rotterdam to London, Ontario, in 1953. The so-called "London Regional School" in art had an impact on Geleynse’s development as an artist, especially Greg Curnoe and Murray Favro and influenced him in making art from his everyday surroundings. Garry Neill Kennedy, (6 November 1935 – 8 August 2021) was a Canadian conceptual artist and educator from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the mid-1970s, he created works that investigated the processes and materials of painting. In the first decade of the 2000s, he expanded his work to investigate art and its social, institutional, and political framework. Life Kennedy was born in St. Catharines, Ontario. He studied at the OCAD, Ontario College of Art (1960) and then earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, University at Buffalo. Roy Kiyooka
Roy Kenzie Kiyooka (January 18, 1926January 8, 1994) was a Canadian painter, poet, photographer, arts teacher, and multi-media artist. Biography A Nisei, or a second generation Japanese Canadian, Roy Kenzie Kiyooka was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and raised in Calgary, Alberta. His parents were Harry Shigekiyo Kiyooka and Mary Kiyoshi Kiyooka. Roy's grandfather on the maternal side, a samurai Ōe Masamichi, was the 17th headmaster of the Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū school of swordsmanship. Roy Kiyooka's brother Harry Mitsuo Kiyooka also became an abstract painter, a professor of art, and sometimes a curator of his brother's work. Roy's youngest brother Frank Kiyooka became a potter.
